The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is seeking an Assistant Collections Manager, Collections Rescue for our Research & Collections Herpetology department. The Assistant Collections Manager, Collections Rescue works closely with the Curator of Herpetology of integrating approximately 5730 lizard tissue samples into the Department of Herpetology Frozen Tissue collection. Processing backlog of specimens (salvaged roadkills and zoo specimens) and integrating those into the research or teaching collections at the Natural History Museum. It is an exciting time as we embark on new journeys of becoming a museum of, for, and with L.A.
Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:
Integrates Dr. Jim Archie’s tissues collection (approximately 5730 tissues, mostly of phrynosomatid lizards) into the Department of Herpetology Frozen Tissue collection.
Works through the backlog of frozen specimens by thawing, taking tissue samples, and then preserving specimens.
Enters collecting and specimen data into a Google spreadsheet, and works with the Collections Manager and Curator to integrate data into the Department of Herpetology Collection Catalog.
Other duties as assigned by the MANAGER and as department needs.
This position has the following requirements:
The ability to follow directions, communicate clearly, and handle specimens carefully.
Experience with data management, such as organizing data in a digital format.
Familiarity with natural history collections and the type of data they maintain.
Experience with Google Suite (Drive, Spreadsheets, etc.).
The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is especially interested in candidates whose background and experience have prepared them to contribute to our commitment to engagement and inclusion at culturally diverse audiences in museums and in sciences.
The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is seeking applicants who have demonstrated experience and commitment working with a diverse community. Hourly range for this position is $24.68 based on experience plus excellent benefits. This is a Part time temporary, non-exempt position with an end date of 08/29/2025.
