Founded by George Lucas and Mellody Hobson, and under the leadership of Sandra Jackson-Dumont, the museum is currently being constructed in Los Angeles' Exposition Park, designed by the acclaimed architect Ma Yansong of MAD Architects.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Collections Research Analyst will be an integral part of the curatorial team, responsible for conducting thorough research and providing essential support for the development of exhibitions and collections.

This role is vital for conducting object research, historical analysis, and cataloging within the museum's collections, while also contributing to specific curatorial projects, including exhibitions and acquisitions.

Under the guidance of the Curatorial department, the Collections Research Analyst will collaborate with museum staff and work independently on various curatorial tasks.

The successful candidate will utilize advanced research methodologies and writing skills to produce research-based documentation on collection items, which may be used for object files, educational materials, publications, and gallery interpretation.

This position requires cataloging findings using The Museum System (TMS) and providing additional administrative support, including the preparation of forms, documents, and project budgets.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct comprehensive research for exhibitions, curatorial initiatives, and publications related to the museum's collections.
  • Exercise independent judgment while performing archival research across local, national, and international repositories to inform the Curatorial Department.
  • Utilize expertise in art history to perform detailed object research, including cultural context, materials, and provenance, to support exhibition and acquisition decisions.
  • Compile and expand artist and object information for research files, including biographical details and publication records.
  • Manage data entry and organization within The Museum System (TMS) in accordance with established standards.
  • Act as a liaison with archivists, scholars, and artists regarding research on careers and specific artworks.
  • Draft research-based texts for various purposes, including object files and the museum's website.
  • Organize and maintain research files to support curatorial recommendations.
  • Participate in team meetings and collaborative sessions with project committees.
  • Assist in managing exhibition development logistics and administrative tasks.
  • Support catalogue research and development initiatives.
  • Engage with technical teams to fulfill curatorial requirements for planning.
  • May involve travel for specific research projects.

  • Master's degree in history, art history, media studies, or a related field is required; Ph.D. preferred.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in a museum or arts institution is required.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with sound judgment.
  • Familiarity with The Museum System (TMS) and best practices in provenance research is preferred.
  • Reading knowledge of two or more languages is required.
