Position Summary

We seek a talented, committed individual inspired by and aligned with our mission and values to join our team This varied and exciting position requires a strategic systems thinker and leader. The Finance Director provides leadership for our organization's financial vision and strategy, managing day-to-day financial activities and operations and performing the essential financial and accounting duties. They will lead the overall process of financial planning, accounting, budgeting, tax form preparation, and auditing activities. The FD is responsible for organizational fiscal stewardship by maintaining computerized financial records, providing auditing support, conducting financial analysis, producing financial reports, managing investment performance reports, and delivering information to stakeholders in a timely and transparent manner.


The Director will lead financial matters of both organizations, advising the Co-Executive Directors and Boards of Directors on long-term financial strategy.  


Key Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited to the Following


Financial/Operational Compliance and Efficiencies

  • Manage, track, and provide financial reports for all restricted funds, including deferred revenues, fiscal sponsorships, and board reserves.
  • Oversee and execute finance operations, including Accounts Payable, Receivables, and Payroll functions.
  • Manage costs and profitability, ensuring expenditures are consistent with the organizations’ budgets and funders’ goals and missions.
  • Ensure organizational* compliance with IRS requirements and other federal and State laws and regulations, including preparation and filing of state and federal reports, including Alaska Public Offices Commission reports.
  • Maintain and keep current the corporate records of both organizations, including current and archived by-laws, articles of incorporation, business licenses, financial records, and HR records.
  • Track and maintain organizations’ assets, including inventory, depreciation schedules, and maintenance/replacement cycles. 
  • Manage all finance and accounting systems, including bookkeeping and payroll software, finance-related applications, corporate credit card accounts, and any secure financial website logins.
  • Ensure financial records are accurate, up-to-date, and GAAP-compliant.
  • Supervise the Finance and Operations Manager.
  • Procure and oversee independent annual audits and 990 filings as required for all organizations.
  • Responsible for the organizations’ relationships with contractors, vendors, and financial institutions.
  • Maintain and update fiscal and operational policies and ensure compliance.
  • Oversee, manage, and execute financial agreements and transactions between the three organizations.
  • Oversee AKC/EF fiscal sponsorships.
  • Implement, negotiate, and manage employee benefits coverages.
  • Support hiring processes, including working with external consultants, competitive salary bands, and benefits.


Budget Development & Management

  • Develop and maintain budget tools and spreadsheets for all three organizations.
  • Work with key staff to develop annual program and department budgets.
  • Provide timely financial statements, complete with an analysis of variances for key staff, the Finance Committee, and the Boards of Directors.
  • Provide year-end projections to facilitate planning.
  • Create and implement financial strategies to ensure financial viability and stability for all three organizations.


Leadership

  • Manage/Supervise/Mentor all members of the finance and operations team, staff and contractors in their management of all aspects of accounting, financial, operations, HR administration, investment management, grants and contracts, and information technology. 
  • Act as a staff point person for the Board of Directors Finance Committee and support sustainable growth.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of Management experience in a finance and operations function, including non-profit and/or foundation experience, is required.
  • Strong financial acumen and judgment combined with a passion for environmental justice.
  • At least 5 years of experience with finances and budgeting, operations, and people management.
  • At least 5 years of experience tracking foundation grant spending, creating grant budgets for proposals, and completing grant reporting requirements.
  • Strong operational and implementation experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of finance, accounting, and HR software systems and the ability to adopt new systems easily in accordance with evolving needs and requirements.
  • At least 5 years of experience and expertise in QuickBooks Desktop or related accounting software.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to track the completion of numerous projects and tasks.
  • Familiarity with 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) regulations and compliance. Preferred knowledge of 527/PAC and reporting requirements.
  • Bachelor’s degree required or equivalent work experience in addition to the 5 years required above.


This is a full-time position based in Anchorage, Alaska. The starting salary range is $95,000 with a generous benefits package including medical, dental, PTO, HSA and 401K plan.
