Position Title: Special Education Teacher

Location: Isleta Elementary School, 1000 Moonlight Drive, Isleta, New Mexico 87022

Contracting Agency: Bureau of Indian Education (BIE)

Employment Type: Contract

Contract Period: August 12, 2024 - August 11, 2025, with four one-year renewal options

Reports To: Principal of Isleta Elementary School and Education Program Administrator, Albuquerque Education Resource Center (ERC)

Purpose of the Position: Join a dedicated team of educators at Isleta Elementary School to make a meaningful impact on the lives of students with special needs. This role provides the opportunity to work closely with the Native American community, fostering a supportive and enriching educational environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Instructional Duties:

ü Plan, implement, and evaluate instructional activities for special education students.

ü Provide instruction as a classroom teacher, team teacher, or remedial services teacher.

ü Develop and adapt instructional methods to meet individual student needs.

ü Conduct classes using various teaching techniques suitable for students diagnosed with learning disabilities.

ü Collaborate with related service providers (e.g., occupational therapists, speech-language therapists) to address IEP requirements.

  • Student and Parent Engagement:

ü Participate in parent-teacher conferences and Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings.

ü Meet with students and families to discuss progress and address concerns.

  • Compliance and Documentation:

ü Follow federal, state, and local regulations, including the 25 Code of Federal Regulations and state standards where applicable.

ü Prepare daily lesson plans based on individual IEPs.

ü Evaluate individual and group progress and redesign instruction as necessary.

ü Maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and the Privacy Act.

  • Professional Development:

ü Participate in required school staff meetings and BIE training.

ü Complete online trainings to access BIE systems and establish a BIE email account.

Qualifications:

  • Educational Requirements:

ü Bachelor’s degree (or higher) from an accredited educational institution.

ü At least 24 semester hours (or equivalent) of coursework in the principal fields of instruction.

ü Valid state teacher certification for appropriate grade levels (K-6) with a Special Education endorsement.

  • Experience:

ü Minimum of 2-5 years of experience working as a Special Education Teacher.

ü Experience working in Native Communities is preferred.

  • Additional Requirements:

ü Must be able to obtain and maintain a background clearance.

ü Valid state driver’s license.

Skills and Competencies:

ü Knowledge of special education materials and techniques.

ü Ability to adapt instructional methods to meet the needs of learning-disabled students.

ü Proficiency in applying clinical teaching approaches.

ü Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

ü Ability to maintain a positive and effective learning environment.

Working Conditions:

ü Full-time position with a minimum of 8 hours per day.

ü Required to work on-site at Isleta Elementary School.

ü Participation in school and community events as needed.
