Title: Accounting Manager

Classification: Exempt

Supervised By: CFO

Guided by our mission to assure the safety and resiliency of children by strengthening families and their communities, Home Start, Inc., a non-profit child abuse prevention and treatment agency, has strengthened and developed San Diego’s families, communities, and systems of care since 1972.

To effectively prevent and treat child abuse, Home Start addresses the conditions that can contribute to risky or abusive situations – poverty, unsafe neighborhoods, lack of affordable housing, and unemployment – while concurrently addressing individual self-sufficiency and emotional needs.

Job Summary: The Accounting Manager is responsible for the day-to-day accounting functions of the agency.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Assist CFO in daily operations of the Fiscal Department to include accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing and payroll.
  2. Responsible for timely submission of monthly bills to funding agencies and reviewing and approving bills prepared by other Fiscal Dept. members prior to submission.
  3. Performs monthly bank reconciliation for cash accounts and balance sheet account reconciliation.
  4. Maintains accurate cash balance information and reviews.
  5. Assist CFO in reviews invoices and check requests for accuracy of general ledger and grant coding.
  6. Works with CFO to establishes and monitor departmental internal controls.
  7. Ensures compliance with all contracts/grants.
  8. Maintains computerized accounting system and integrity of accounting data.
  9. Maintains appropriate data back up.
  10. Along with CFO, represents agency with funding and contracting organizations and subcontractors.
  11. Assists with budget preparation as required.
  12. Assists CFO with annual independent audit.
  13. Satisfies state/federal/county reporting requirements
  14. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Education: BA/BS or equivalent and a minimum of four years experience in non-profit accounting and supervision. Experience managing government contracts and issuing claims for reimbursement and other funder invoices.
  • Abilities: Management and leadership skills with ability to prioritize workload and work under pressure with multiple deadlines and attention to detail. Ability to communicate clearly to agency staff and outside contacts.
  • Skills: Strong computer skills in the use of accounting software package and ADP. MIP Fund Accounting Software experience preferred. Must be able to use computer, printer, 10-key adding machine and other office equipment. Strong analytical skills are required.
  • Knowledge: Demonstrated knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.

Physical Demands:

  • Sitting for long periods of time at a desk while typing and viewing a computer screen.
  • Using hands to operate keyboard and other office equipment.
  • Occasional standing and walking and lifting up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasional driving to meetings with vendors and funders in the community.

Work Environment:

The noise level fluctuates from quiet to somewhat noisy depending on how many employees are in the office at any one time.
