Job Description: Manufacturing Engineer

Stabilus is a global leader in the production of gas springs and dampers on five continents. Our products can be used in a wide variety of industries, such as the automotive and office chair manufacturing industries, furniture technology, solar industry, medical technology, and many other industrial applications. This position will be located in our U.S. Headquarters in Gastonia, NC.

Objectives

· Provide support to manufacturing through efficient and correct introduction to manufacturing assembly operations of all parts currently used in or entering into series production.

· Provide technical expertise in the improvement of manufacturing operations for efficiency and safety.

· Manage projects to a successful completion within schedule and cost parameters.

· Develop and implement new production processes and provide optimizations for current processes to ensure product quality.

· Improve profitability with emphasis on completion/introduction prior to a new product launch or equipment start-up.

· Technical expert for 2 or more manufacturing processes.

· Responsible for technical support of one or more functional areas or departments.

· Provides support to training department.

· May supervisor or direct co-op students, rotational engineers, contract personnel, junior level engineer, maintenance technicians and hourly associates.

· The individual in this position has an obligation to attain continuous improvement and is responsible for the quality of their work. They are partially responsible for the quality of the company and its products.

 

Main Tasks

· The Manufacturing Engineer will be qualified to perform as technical expert for at least two manufacturing processes for the factory.

· The Manufacturing Engineer will be the primary technical resource for at least one functional area/department within the factory.

· Provide technical support for new product introductions.

· Provide technical support to other manufacturing department engineers.

· May supervise or direct co-op students, rotational engineers, contract personnel or maintenance technicians.

· Support the development of manufacturing work instruction and organizational procedures in accordance with company and international standards (e.g. ISO-9001, TS-16949, VDA 6.1 and ISO-14000).

· Participate in quality systems activities and perform internal audits to various standards such as ISO-9001, TS-16949, VDA 6.1 and ISO-14000.

· Manage new or modified machine upgrade projects, responsible for all phases of machine introduction into production, timing plan, identify manning requirements, identify products to run on machine, machine acceptance form, training plan.

· The position holder is responsible for the handling of assigned investment projects up to series introduction in coordination with the operating department.

· Act as a team member on project teams. Projects are often significant capital acquisitions or evaluations of critical processes for specific products. The successful project implementation is usually crucial to the performance of the company as a whole.

· Coordinate resolution of quality issues through current and accepted quality techniques.

 

Secondary Tasks

· This associate is required to observe existing procedural instructions and work instructions and to act accordingly.

· Uphold the passive control system of the company.

· Abide by all rules of the company such as safety, confidentiality, and organizational directives.

· The associate is responsible for complying with all safety and environmental rules and procedures of the company.

 

Education, Training, Certifications

· Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in engineering or engineering technology, preferable in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or manufacturing engineering, from an ABET accredited school is required to prepare for this position.

· In lieu of a formal BS degree, 10 years’ experience in manufacturing engineering, in addition to other required experience, may qualify the individual for this position.

 

Experience

· Previous experience up to four years in manufacturing engineering, or a related field, in a manufacturing environment is generally sufficient to acquire the skills for this position.

· Six months to one-year work experience in this position in required to become proficient with most phases of this job.

 

Job Knowledge and Skills

· Focuses training in two specialty fields is required: Typical specialties are:

o Automation and robotics

o Control systems and PLC programming primarily Siemens S% & S7

o SCADA systems and programming

o Tool design

o Machine design

o CNC programming

o Welding Theory and application

· Close attention to detail is required when evaluating manufacturing processes and problem solving.

· The Manufacturing Engineer is required to handle multiple tasks.

· Due to the nature of this multifunctional position, interruptions are frequent and stressful situations may occur.

· The engineer must be able to:

o Spend time on the manufacturing floor and work around equipment. The position requires the ability to work in small spaces, stretch, reach, bend, to access areas of machinery and equipment.

o Work safely in oily, dirty, hot/cold, and slippery environments from time to time.

o Manipulate common tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers, and hammers, utilizing two tools simultaneously.

o Work with good hand/eye coordination.

o Work at a computer utilizing keyboard, mouse, or equivalent input device.

o Lift up to 20 kg (44 lbs.) routinely.

o Spend up to 12 hours on the manufacturing floor.

o Discern color differences of wiring, chemicals, and lights.

o Hear warning bells and buzzers.

o Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, hearing protection, safety shoes, and hardhat may be required in the execution of this position.

 

Accountability / Impact of Errors

· Failure to complete task efficiently could slow the productivity of others, which affects customer deliveries. Work in cooperation with others to ensure a safe atmosphere to prevent any workplace injuries.

· Improper repair or diagnosis of problems could result in extended machine downtime, causing production delays and jeopardizing customer relations.

 

Working Conditions

· The engineer works in a normal office environment with frequent visits to the manufacturing area.

· Noise, dirt, oil, chemicals, and safety hazards to only a minor degree and on an unobjectionable level will be encountered.

· Infrequent travel to other Stabilus centers of operation may be necessary. Typically, less than 2 weeks per year.
