People’s Self-Help Housing is looking to hire a Development Accountant Manager to support the Corporate Accounting team in a variety of functions, this position will be based in the San Luis Obispo corporate office.


With a mission to build affordable homes with site-based services that offer opportunities to change lives and strengthen communities, People's Self-Help Housing is the longest-serving nonprofit developer on California’s Central Coast. We serve low-income working families, farmworkers, seniors, and veterans, and we provide welcoming environments for those living with disabilities and for the formerly homeless. Along with building and managing beautiful and accessible neighborhoods in San Luis, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties, we offer a broad array of programs to promote health, education, and connections to community-based resources.


Position Summary

The Development Accounting Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of accounting work related to PSHH ongoing development and construction projects. This role requires a strong understanding of accounting principles and functions, with specific focus on job costs and the general ledger. This position reports to the Corporate Controller.

Essential Functions

  • Perform a variety of duties related to the management of developmental draw process for multiple on-going projects. This includes month-end closing of corporate (and related party) accounting records, journal entries, accruals, allocations of various indirect, office and project related costs, etc.
  • Analyze and reconcile general ledger accounts in all applicable entities.
  • Review project cost activity to ensure accurate and consistent coding.
  • Work closely with construction and development departments to enter and maintain project budgets in the accounting system and provide reporting on same.
  • Work closely with Development Leadership to create and maintain an effective flow of information between accounting, finance, and development operations.
  • Work with team on completion of Funding Draws for Projects from various funding sources (banks, grants, etc.) via AIA documents and other required support.
  • Maintain accurate and current accounting files.
  • Work with internal stakeholders to close-out projects upon completion.
  • Prepare monthly trial balances and financial statements according to GAAP principles.
  • Actively look for ways to streamline and expedite monthly close process.
  • Assist in annual audit preparation and year-end closing.
  • Supervise, train, and mentor direct reports to ensure cross training.
  • Utilize office and software programs and equipment to perform above duties as required by fiscal processes.
  • Attend local and out of town training seminars.
Requirements:

Skill & Knowledge Requirements

  • Understanding of job costing including project sources and uses.
  • Familiarity with multiple entities & related parties.
  • Intermediate or Advanced Excel.
  • Aptitude for detail and accuracy with numbers.
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to multitask and prioritize workflow.
  • Positive attitude and professional demeanor.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in-writing.
  • Takes personal ownership over tasks and asks for help, when needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all financial data

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of construction and general accounting experience.
  • Non-Profit accounting experience a plus, but not required.
  • Experience with the AIA process including Liens and Lien Waivers.
  • Previous experience managing a high volume of detailed, confidential, and repetitive work preferred.

Education Requirements

  • B.S. in Accounting/Finance or related field.
  • Commensurate experience in lieu of an advance degree will be considered.

License/Certification Requirements

  • Must possess a valid California driver’s license, proof of auto insurance and access to a dependable form of transportation.

Physical Requirements

  • Sitting for extended period, some standing (managing physical files).
