Coastal1 Credit Union, headquartered in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, is seeking a Controller/Senior Vice President.

Job Purpose

To oversee the Accounting Department; the Credit Union’s adherence to Generally Accepted Accounting Principals; timely and accurate financial reporting; the financial planning functions of asset/liability management and cash management. Also, for representing the Credit Union to regulatory agencies, auditors and other outside entities associated with the financial and accounting condition of the Credit Union.

Education and Experience:

  • Undergraduate degree in accounting or finance required; advanced degree in same field or related field strongly preferred.
  • At least 10 to 15 years of demonstrated successful work-related experience in the accounting area of a credit union, financial institution, or finance company. At least 5 years of significant managerial experience of an accounting department and staff.
  • CPA strongly preferred.
  • Computer proficiency to include MS Office and assorted banking/accounting software and internet research.
  • Proven ability to gather and analyze data and information, draw logical conclusions, and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Advanced knowledge in State, Federal, and Compliance Banking regulatory issues.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Effective presentation skills.
  • Proven problem-solving ability. Ability to reach decisions by thinking strategically for short-and long-term solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously. Time management/organizational/multi-tasking skills.
  • Ability to maintain a positive and upbeat Credit Union image.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle highly confidential and sometimes controversial information securely.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across all levels and functions of the organization to coordinate solutions.
  • Ability to effectively balance policies, procedures, and administrative requirements of the Credit Union.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Execute properly all primary responsibilities as outlined above.
  2. Prepare necessary reports and analytical support for management and the Board as well as for outside agencies and regulatory authorities.
  3. Responsible for cash management to ensure effective utilization of excess funds to the maximum extent; also, for the safekeeping of investment portfolio and for ensuring the delivery process is fulfilled.
  4. Interface with outside auditors and regulatory authorities in those areas where the examination entails accounting treatment and financial reporting.
  5. Manage the ProfitStar profitability software, calculate branch/organizational profitability.
  6. Oversee ongoing staff development and training, foster a work environment that assures each staff member the opportunity to reach his/her full potential. Introduce training and enrichment programs to help maintain high levels of knowledge and capabilities. Ensure adequate levels of cross training so as to minimize disruption in cases of personnel shortages and during peak periods of work activity.
  7. Manage all departmental staff through the Assistant Controller and provide guidance and assistance as needed.
  8. Foster and maintain good relations with vendors associated with the financial applications and maintain high level of expertise in the use of these systems.
  9. Provide creative and insightful input to senior management in the overall planning and operation of the Credit Union.
  10. Participate actively and effectively as a management member of the Asset/Liability Committee.
  11. Perform other duties as required.
