Reporting to the Public Programs Volunteer Manager, the Public Programs Volunteer Coordinator collaborates with the Public Programs Volunteer Manager, the Training and Facilitation Specialist, and the Public Programs Coordinator to lead and support the Education and Public Programs adult volunteer programs, the Field Museum Volunteer Center, and Field Museum Public Programs in general.

This position is within the Sue Ling Gin Center for Education and Public Programs. The Public Programs adult volunteer program develops and executes interactive, hands-on educational programming and tours led by adult volunteers. These teams include the Discovery Squad, Tour Guide Docents, and Exhibition Host Docents. This position also provides general administrative support for all Education and Public Programs volunteers, including those supporting Field Trips and the Crown Family PlayLab.

The regular schedule for this role is Sunday - Thursday, 8:30 am-4:30 pm. This position is exclusively onsite at the Field Museum.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the daily operations of the Public Programs Adult Volunteer program: serve as the front-line communicator for volunteer assistance and needs, lead daily volunteer team meetings, coordinate program scheduling, execute materials ordering and organization, opening and closing procedures of select exhibition spaces, and general reporting and data entry
  • Collaborate with staff members and volunteers to build and maintain a positive volunteer culture
  • Create, edit, and distribute volunteer-facing communications, including newsletters and email communications, internal communication, and general information sharing or reporting
  • Train, coach, and lead volunteers in executing science and natural history-focused programming and activities for museum visitors on a daily basis
  • Lead and assist with program content creation, development, and research as assigned
  • Regularly host and independently facilitate programming in the Grainger Science Hub as needed and assigned
  • Assist with the onboarding of new public-facing volunteers, including leading basic training in Volgistics and Google Classroom software/databases
  • Coordinate and recruit current volunteers for internal requests or special events
  • Provide support to other staff who lead Education and Public Programs volunteer onboarding and training
  • Assist with and execute other Public Programming as recognized and assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in education, sciences, communication, nonprofit management, or similar fields of study, or equivalent experience, is required
  • 1-3 years of experience working with volunteers, or similar experience, is required
  • 1-3 years of experience leading, facilitating, designing, or coaching informal, hands-on educational programming in a fast-paced environment is required
  • Strong written communication skills, detail-oriented, and well organized
  • Experience working with computer software such as Google Suite and/or volunteer management databases (Volgistics) or similar tools
