Job Summary: The Therapeutic Recreation Counselor provides guidance, training assessments, and treatment services to residents, individually or in groups, using experiential learning and therapeutic recreation principles and techniques. The Therapeutic Recreation Counselor also participates in weekly meetings as well as the development of treatment plans for youth in care. This position is a full-time, non-exempt and reports to the Director of Residential Services.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Complete Therapeutic Recreation assessments on all new residents as assigned. Works as a member of the treatment team to integrate the outcomes of the assessments into initial and comprehensive treatment plans.
  2. Plan and lead Therapeutic recreation interventions with clients using experiential learning and therapeutic recreation principles. Uses the pool and other resources for the development of team building, trust and achievement of other individual/ group goals
  3. Support the treatment milieu by providing leadership and treatment teams with therapeutic insight as to the behavioral and emotional needs of the residents and conveys this to appropriate Clinicians, Behavioral Associate, Behavioral Assistant and others providing treatment for youth. Is adept at making treatment decisions, in conjunction with other members of the treatment team that will have positive results for the residents.
  4. Consults with the Behavioral Assistant and Behavioral Leads in the planning, scheduling, and coordinating activities for the Residential Program, ensuring a variety of culturally diverse programs/projects.
  5. Possesses first hand knowledge of residents’ individualized treatment plans and ensures they are implemented. Completes daily Therapeutic recreation log, Progress notes, Treatment plan updates and Discharge plans in a timely and professional manner.
  6. Consults with the Clinical team in planning, scheduling, and coordinating monthly activities for the Residential program and community/group homes, ensuring a variety of culturally diverse programs/projects.
  7. Collaborates with the Occupational Therapist on activity planning in order to provide programming that explores leisure development, enhances sensory exploration and promotes independence with daily tasks.
  8. Provides aquatic and health standard refresher training to new employee and Learning Center staff.
  9. Maintains an inventory of recreation supplies and supports all houses with recreational activity planning.

Other Duties:

  1. Assists in planning and facilitating of special events that have therapeutic value for the residents.
  2. Drives residents to therapeutic recreational activities as required. Maintains a valid driver’s license and insurance coverage through the agency insurance carrier.
  3. Assists in training new Therapeutic Recreational Counselors when necessary. Serves as a resource of therapeutic recreation principles and activities.
  4. Displays exemplary role modeling on the job and when in other contact with the residents
  5. Fulfills other responsibilities as requested by the Director of Residential Services and Program Coordinator.

Experience, Requirements and Qualifications:

Mus possess 60+ College Credits and/or an Associate’s Degree, Bachelors’ Degree preferred. Focus in Therapeutic Recreation desired. Certification with NCTRC as a CTRS, or eligibility to sit for the certification exam within the first year of hire is desired. At least one year of experience in planning and facilitating Therapeutic Recreation treatment groups for people with disabilities with ASD and other PDDs is required. Certification in PMT, CPR, and First Aid will be provided by the agency. Certification in Lifeguarding, Water safety instructor (WSI) and Ropes Course experience is a plus, but trainings will be offered and provided by the agency when necessary.

Must have a positive attitude, demonstrated sound judgment, and be able to establish rapport with residents of diverse ages and both genders, colleagues, and other staff. The ability to work with residents and other employees from diverse ethnic, economic, educational and religious backgrounds is requisite.
