Recreational Therapy Specialist

Position Summary: The Recreational Therapy Specialist is responsible for delivering therapeutic guidance, conducting assessments, and providing treatment services to residents, either individually or in group settings, utilizing experiential learning and principles of therapeutic recreation. This role involves active participation in weekly meetings and the formulation of treatment plans for youth in care. This is a full-time, non-exempt position reporting to the Director of Residential Services.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct Therapeutic Recreation assessments for all newly admitted residents as assigned, collaborating with the treatment team to incorporate assessment outcomes into initial and comprehensive treatment plans.
- Design and facilitate Therapeutic Recreation interventions for clients, employing experiential learning and therapeutic recreation methodologies. Utilize available resources, including the pool, to foster team building, trust, and the achievement of individual and group objectives.
- Enhance the treatment environment by providing leadership and insights regarding the behavioral and emotional needs of residents, effectively communicating these insights to Clinicians, Behavioral Associates, and other treatment providers.
- Collaborate with the Behavioral Assistant and Behavioral Leads to plan, schedule, and coordinate activities for the Residential Program, ensuring a diverse range of culturally relevant programs and projects.
- Maintain thorough knowledge of residents' individualized treatment plans, ensuring their implementation. Complete daily logs, progress notes, treatment plan updates, and discharge plans in a timely and professional manner.
- Work with the Clinical team to plan, schedule, and coordinate monthly activities for the Residential program and community/group homes, ensuring a variety of culturally diverse programs/projects.
- Partner with the Occupational Therapist to plan activities that promote leisure development, enhance sensory exploration, and encourage independence in daily tasks.
- Provide aquatic and health standard refresher training to new employees and Learning Center staff.
- Oversee the inventory of recreational supplies and assist all houses with planning recreational activities.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Assist in the planning and execution of special events that hold therapeutic value for residents.
- Transport residents to therapeutic recreational activities as needed, maintaining a valid driver's license and insurance coverage through the agency.
- Support the training of new Recreational Therapy Specialists as necessary, serving as a resource for therapeutic recreation principles and activities.
- Exhibit exemplary role modeling in interactions with residents and during job-related activities.
- Fulfill additional responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Residential Services and Program Coordinator.
Qualifications and Requirements:
Candidate must possess 60+ college credits and/or an Associate's Degree, with a Bachelor's Degree preferred. A focus in Therapeutic Recreation is desirable. Certification with NCTRC as a CTRS, or eligibility to sit for the certification exam within the first year of employment, is preferred. A minimum of one year of experience in planning and facilitating Therapeutic Recreation treatment groups for individuals with disabilities, including ASD and other PDDs, is required. The agency will provide certification in PMT, CPR, and First Aid. Additional certifications in Lifeguarding, Water Safety Instructor (WSI), and Ropes Course experience are advantageous, with training provided by the agency as necessary.
Candidates should demonstrate a positive attitude, sound judgment, and the ability to establish rapport with residents of diverse ages and backgrounds, as well as colleagues and other staff members. The ability to work effectively with individuals from various ethnic, economic, educational, and religious backgrounds is essential.
