Description

Summary:

The Systems Engineer in the Assessment Department manages and builds the online systems employed by American Councils to conduct high-stakes, online language assessments. A primary effort in the department is the development, delivery, and maintenance of the functionality of proficiency-based, online language assessments for multiple languages and programs. The Systems Engineer has the primary responsibility for writing all back-end and front-end code, managing the relevant databases, designing user-friendly interfaces, and maintaining all aspects of the AWS architecture on which the systems run.

The ACLASS Testing System was developed by American Councils to provide end-to-end support for creating test items and forms, administering both high and low-stakes assessments, scoring, item analysis and reporting. ACLASS comprises three specialized sub-systems for: (1) collaborative item development (PHP/MySQL/JQuery); (2) online test administration (PHP/MySQL/JQuery); and (3) item banking, form assembly, registration and scheduling (Ruby-on-Rails/AngularJS).

Responsibilities:
  • Build/maintain key system functions to meet the needs of the Assessment team
  • Interface via APIs, as needed, to coordinate with partner systems (AIS)
  • Continually upgrade legacy systems and programs that ACLASS serves
  • Ensure modern security protocols for all programs
  • Write/update user documentation for new and updated features
  • Continual staff training on existing and new system features
  • Monitoring of test administration and reporting on any incidents that arise
  • Generating custom reports as requested by the funders and Assessment team and other programs that ACLASS serves (FLEX)


Qualification Highlights:

Advanced degree in computer science.

At least 5-10 years of professional experience with demonstrable proficiency in:
  • Backend design (Ruby on Rails and PHP) (required)
  • Database management SQL and (non-SQL)
  • Interface design (JQuery/Bootstrap, AngularJS)
  • Building and using RESTful APIs (internal and third-party)
  • Server administration (Ubuntu, Apache, Nginx)

Salary Range: $120,000 to $150,000 per year, reflecting various factors such as qualifications and experience.
