GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY

The Lower Elementary Assistant works closely with the Lower Elementary Guide to maintain the classroom environment and assist in student enrichment and classroom management.


JOB SCOPE

Collaborates with Lower Elementary Guide and other school professionals to meet the needs of all students emotionally, socially, and academically.


May be asked to help organize field trips, or to work with room parents for organizing classroom activities.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assists in preparing and maintaining the prepared Montessori environment
  • Assists with the care and maintenance of classroom materials, maintaining an orderly environment and keeping it clean and in good condition
  • Assists in the preparation of curriculum materials
  • Works with individual and small groups of students as directed by the Lower Elementary Guide
  • Shares responsibility for the safety and physical well-being of the students
  • Greets student in morning carpool, ensuring their safety as they exit their vehicle
  • Walks with students to BASE, After School Activities, or afternoon carpool. Assist students/ Lower Elementary Guide as required
  • Assists Lower Elementary Guide with implementing guidelines for behavior in the classroom, helping foster each student’s social and academic growth
  • Shares with Lower Elementary Guide any observation regarding student behavior, relaying information directly to Director of Lower Elementary when necessary or in the absence of the Lower Elementary Guide
  • Reports all accidents/incidents at once. Completes Incident Report and delivers copies of the same to parent and School Nurse
  • Supervises students during lunch prep, lunch, and recess
  • Assists Lower Elementary Guide with field trip planning and preparation, and attends field trips
  • Takes the lead in the classroom in the absence of the Lower Elementary Guide
  • Refers parent questions and/or concerns to Lower Elementary Guide
  • Attends school, community, and/or parent education events as detailed in the Employee Handbook or as assigned by Director of Lower Elementary
  • Meets with the Lower Elementary Guide to learn about the classroom duties and responsibilities towards the beginning of the academic year
  • Participates in weekly meetings with the Lower Elementary Guide to discuss the individual needs of the students and classroom environment in general
  • Attends and actively participates in Lower Elementary team meetings, and other meetings as assigned.
  • Commits to professional development and best practices in Montessori education
  • Complies with the content of the Employee Handbook for all duties not listed
  • Adheres to the behaviors described in the Alcuin Standards of Faculty Excellence
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Lower Elementary and/or Head of School


MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

  • Completes bus drivers training and drives students in an Alcuin school bus as needed for school related activities
  • Mentors new Lower Elementary Assistants as requested by the Director of Lower Elementary


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Required:

  • Ability to provide documents verifying authorization to work in the U.S.
  • Must pass Criminal Background Checks and Drug Testing
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Strong Interpersonal skills
  • 2+ years working with children
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Suite of products
  • Ability to interact and communicate professionally with colleagues, students, parents, and others in the school community and during off-campus school related activities
  • Ability to function as a team with colleagues and Director of Lower Elementary, and with other administrators as required
  • Willing to take Montessori Classroom Assistant’s Training, if recommended


Preferred:

  • 4 years’ experience working with children

PAY RANGE

Pay is based on experience and is competitive with Independent Schools in the Dallas, Texas, area.


WORK SCHEDULE

Generally, Monday to Friday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm. There may be some evening or weekend work for events or projects. Holidays, Spring Break off unless work is required for a project.


JOB CONDITIONS

  • Works in standard office and classroom climate and conditions
  • Works outdoors supervising students at carpool and on school trips
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 30lbs of supplies
