Position Overview:

Planet Aid is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Industry & Government Affairs Manager to serve voice in the conversation around sustainability and textile waste across the United States. This crucial role involves collaborating with local, state, and federal government agencies, as well as within the industry to promote and enhance the recovery of secondhand clothing. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in government affairs and a passion for sustainability.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with government agencies on initiatives to increase secondhand clothing recovery.
  • Enroll in key organizations that impact the secondhand clothing and recycling field.
  • Attend relevant meetings, trade shows, forums, and events nationwide.
  • Monitor and analyze state and local legislation affecting Planet Aid and manage engagement to ensure favorable outcomes.
  • Oversee outside legal counsel and legislative consultants as directed by the CEO.


Essential Duties:

  • Monitor and analyze legislation impacting Planet Aid.
  • Provide proactive notice of legislative issues to the leadership team.
  • Draft government relations materials for various uses.
  • Enhance Planet Aid’s profile with state and local agencies.
  • Develop relationships with government officials, economic development organizations, civic and business leaders, and local media.
  • Analyze industry reports and summarize for the leadership team.
  • Represent Planet Aid at municipal council meetings, stakeholder meetings, and industry conventions.
  • Advocate for our operations model to address municipal concerns and increase market access.
  • Resolve government relations issues promptly.
  • Manage and collaborate with outside consultants to achieve government relations goals.
  • Log and update government relations information in the company CMS.


Qualifications:

  • 6-10 years of successful experience in government affairs, public policy, or legislative affairs.
  • Bachelor's degree in Public Policy, Political Science, Government Relations, Environmental Studies, Business Administration, Communications, or a related field required. (Master's degree preferred.)
  • Experience in the secondhand clothing industry or solid waste and recycling field is preferred.
  • Strong relationship-building and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Ability to travel frequently within the U.S.


The Purpose of the Position:

The modern secondhand clothing industry in the USA is a multibillion-dollar domestic and global sector with roots in managing scarce textile resources from the late 1800s to after WWII. Today, US for-profit companies and non-profit organizations collect, sort, resell, and export 2 million tons of discarded clothing annually. The industry has largely been unregulated, but recent state initiatives and federal reviews aim to recover textiles before they end up in landfills and incinerators, addressing environmental concerns and the growing threat of textile waste from "Fast Fashion."


Planet Aid has collected and exported more than 1 million tons of used clothing over 30 years of service to communities and people in the USA and globally.
