What you need to qualify

  • Two years of experience determining eligibility for an agency program by interviewing to assess the needs of clients and interpreting and applying the policies, rules, and guidelines applicable to the client's situation.

  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience relative to the class concept.

Essential attributes

Technical and soft skills that may help the candidate be successful in this role. We are looking for candidates with:

•  Experience interviewing customers in person & by phone to obtain information to determine eligibility for a service or program.
•  Experience demonstrating compassion and empathy with customers experiencing financial or emotional stress.
•  Experience working independently with little guidance, as well as experience contributing to a high functioning team.
•  Experience in completing tasks and projects with deadlines while prioritizing a high-volume workload.
•  Experience adapting communication styles to meet various customers’ needs while professionally interacting and communicating complex information to a high volume of diverse customers.
•  Experience in creating and maintaining written documentation of activities concerning individual client cases.
• Experience interpreting and applying policy and procedure.

Your duties at a glance

As an employee working in the (SSP), you will have an opportunity to provide resources and services to help people move out of poverty and toward whole well-being. Programs include food benefits, cash assistance, childcare assistance, medical, services for domestic violence survivors, resources for refugees and support for youth experiencing homelessness. 

As a Benefit & Eligibility Worker, you will:

  • Perform eligibility determinations, redeterminations, periodic reviews, and updates to changes for ODHS, Oregon Health Authority (OHA), and Department of Early Learning and Care (DELC) programs.

  • Assessing client family strengths and needs, connecting families to other resources and programs.

  • You will update narrative report summarizing new information from client and collateral sources, findings of home visit, and conclusions.

Working conditions

  • Work is conducted in offices and other program sites.

  • May interact with clients who are under emotional or financial stress.

  • May require sitting at a terminal or telephone for prolonged periods of the workday.

  • This position works in the Self Sufficiency office.
