Responsibilities



Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and the Institute for Integrated Catalysis (IIC) represent scientific and engineering leadership in catalysis research for the nation and world, serving a wide variety of federal and commercial clients. The Chemical & Biological Processing group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is looking for post-doctorate candidates to perform fundamental and/or applied R&D work on heterogeneous catalysis and process development to produce clean fuels and chemicals from biomass-derived oxygenates.

The position requires a versatile individual with applied/hands-on laboratory experience, experience in authoring primary research publications, and an understanding of concepts employed in heterogeneous catalysis and biomass conversion. Projects available range from fundamental studies involving the molecular-level structural and functional aspects of heterogeneous catalysts to applied research involving catalyst and process development. The successful candidate will be responsible for both theoretical tasks, such as drafting technical reports and research manuscripts, and practical research involving catalyst synthesis and characterization and reactor operation and setup. The successful candidate will be expected to work effectively and safely with an interdisciplinary team of researchers, be self-motivated, and have excellent communication skills. The results of the successful candidate's work will be used to generate peer-reviewed publications, intellectual property, presentations at national conferences, and new research proposals. 


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications:

Received a Ph.D. in chemical engineering or chemistry within the past three years from an accredited college or university. Training and hands-on research experiences in:reactor operation, and troubleshootingHeterogeneous catalyst synthesis and characterizationkinetic measurement for heterogenous catalystsSpectroscopic techniques such as FTIR and NMR for the characterization of catalytic materials A track record of conducting original scientific research and publishing results in high-impact peer-reviewed journals Be a motivated and creative individual who aspires to grow into an independent and productive researcher.
