Richland, United States Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Full time

Responsibilities

This post-doctoral research associate position in the Applied Materials and Manufacturing Group will conduct research on high-efficiency solid oxide energy conversion systems at the forefront of clean energy technology. The position holder will assist in fabricating, testing, and characterizing high temperature electrochemical solid oxide cells and electrochemical reactions and contribute to evaluating electrochemical device performance. The position holder will work as an integrated member of the team, interfacing and collaborating with other researchers.

The duties of the position include:

Developing and executing experimental plans to synthesize materials for high temperature electrolyzers. Employing advanced characterization techniques to deeply understand material properties and behavior, especially under operational conditions typical to high-temperature electrolyzers. Diving deep into the intrinsic properties of materials, extracting insights on their structure, composition, and other inherent characteristics that influence performance in high-temperature electrolyzers. Designing and executing experiments that characterize materials under real operational conditions, mirroring the environment within high-temperature electrolyzers.

The position holder will:

Carry out laboratory work independently with the support of other technical staff. Clearly document experimental results and reporting findings to the team at regular intervals. Perform work safely and in accordance with lab policy and training. Contribute to scientific publications and presentations at professional society conferences and/or to sponsors.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ph.D. in materials science, chemical engineering, chemistry, catalysis, physics, or related field. Experience in high temperature ceramic processing and skills in characterization of those materials. Extensive experience in electrochemical characterization of solid oxide cells, including electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, solid state electrochemistry, equivalent circuit modeling, and distribution of relaxation times. Experience in catalysis and electrocatalysis helpful. Experience in data collection and data processing automation is preferable. Prior experience with quality assurance/quality control is desirable. Detail oriented; self-motivated; and works well with deadlines to deliver high quality, timely results. Works well in a team. Good writing and communication skills.
Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment

The position holder will work in research laboratories, which are inherently hazardous working environments. Exposure to mechanical hazards, chemicals, etc., are kept to a minimum and mitigated through the use of controls and the maintenance of a safety-conscious work environment.
