The Nuclear Engineering group within PNNL is seeking a Mechanical/Nuclear engineer Post Masters Research Assistant (PMRA) with a focus on nuclear and space technologies. The successful candidate (in addition to fundamental Mechanical and Nuclear engineering analysis, design, and materials expertise) will have knowledge of and a strong desire to assist with research work in aerospace applications and the aerospace engineering industry. Some experience with nuclear reactor analyses, security and safety related aspects for space-based applications is desired. Certification in spacecraft/satellite research, development, design, and operations is a plus. The PMRA candidate will be part of the Nuclear, Chemical and Biological Division. Our mission includes the science, technology development, and operational expertise to neutralize emerging national security threats. In this role, the key responsibilities of the successful candidate will be to:

Work with Project Managers and sponsors and serve as a research assistant to analyze technologies, concepts, designs, and strategies for countering space related emerging defense issues. Providing research assistance on engineering topics where analysis of unique situations and data requires evaluation and assessment of a variety of factors. Exercise judgement in researching strategy, methods, techniques, and criteria that will assist the project team with generating optimum solutions and results. Research key project issues that will allow for improved understanding of and knowledge of initiatives that will lead to improvements and expanding the project. Expertise in core engineering topics with strong analytical thinking, excellent verbal communication skills and including Structural Statics and Dynamics Analyses, Finite Element Methods, Orbital Dynamics, Physics, Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics, Nuclear Materials Science, Radioisotopes, Computer operating systems, Hardware, and Software. Maintain effective working relationships with other project engineers, project managers, and stakeholders. Develop positive influence across project interest groups. Research assigned designs and strategies that can be applied to meet project goals. Author technical white papers and technical documentation in assigned areas of expertise. Maintain interactions with and among a diverse set of multi-disciplined PNNL and external teams. Frequent communication with project points of contact is expected and required with the ability to effectively interface with others to clearly describe research results. This position may require occasional travel to PNNL to interface with project team members. If candidate cannot be onsite at PNNL, periodic travel to a secure location will be required. The position will require engineering work on non-sensitive, sensitive, and classified information as required by the assigned project research topics. The incumbent must demonstrate an ability to manage sensitive information while conducting research. The person in this position must recognize and accept that they will be working in technical areas associated with the National Security of the United States.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must have received a Master’s degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.  Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in mechanical or nuclear engineering with related aerospace and nuclear industry experience.  Oral and written communication skills, including detailed technical and science writing ability conveying complex information accurately. Ability to provide technical research assistance on a variety of problems with highly complex scope that is based on national policies and industry standards. Experience, knowledge of, and certification on spacecraft/satellite design and operations including national policies and the associated international standards and organizations.

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.

In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).

This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). The candidate selected for this position will be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing for illegal drugs, including marijuana, consistent with the Controlled Substances Act and the PNNL Workplace Substance Abuse Program.
