Responsibilities



The Advanced Energy Systems Group at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) has an opening for a Post Bachelors Research Associate - Mechanical Engineer to support their programs in novel equipment design, construction and testing. The project portfolio includes novel technology under development for cryogenic gas liquefaction. 

The ideal candidate is a well-organized, self-starter, with a high capacity for attention to detail. Verbal and written communication skills, as well as strong time management skills, are essential in order to balance activities among several concurrently operating projects. In addition, skills in the following areas are desired and will be developed:

Ability to contribute to and follow procedures for operating test systems in laboratory fume hoods involving systems with both cryogenic and high temperatures at elevated pressures. Ability to following instructions and complete tasks assigned by staff engineers and mentors. Ability to participate constructively and taking ownership in the success of interdisciplinary project teams. Ability to document work in laboratory notebooks and record and process data acquired from testing. Ability to write up research results and contributing to associated journal publications. Ability to develop new equipment designs and processes using CAD and multi-physics modeling tools.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must have received a Bachelor’s degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university. Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 required.

Preferred Qualifications:

B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering. Design experience with 3D CAD systems, preferably SolidWorks and/or Creo. Experience in developing and following safety planning procedures for industrial equipment and processes involving multiple hazards including flammable gases, high pressures, low temperatures, electromagnetics, and chemicals. Experience with multi-physics tools, such as COMSOL. Experience with additive manufacturing. Operating knowledge of a variety of processing equipment, such as pumps, motors, thermocouples, pressure transducers, etc.
Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment

Laboratory work performed will include assembly and operation of equipment in fume hoods involving cryogenic and flammable materials at high pressures.
