We are seeking a Lead After Hours Child Protective Services Worker (Social Service Specialist 1) to join our Child Welfare team in Portland, OR. This position will receive a 5% differential for lead worker duties. In this role, you provide guidance to other staff including training, mentoring, and assigning tasks to staff.

Summary of Job Duties

As an employee working within the , you will have an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of Oregon’s most vulnerable children and families. Your dedication will help us achieve the Child Welfare that will support children and young adults to be safer, healthier, experience less trauma and achieve a greater well-being.  

A Child Protective Services Worker’s duties include:

  • Supervision and Consultation:

    • Oversee and assign work to CPS Caseworkers as needed to respond to child abuse and neglect referrals.

    • Conduct and review interviews and pertinent documents.

    • Assess home environments for abuse and neglect and take protective actions as needed.

    • Consult with caseworkers, on-call Supervisors, and Program Managers.

  • Person In Charger (PIC) Coverage:

    • Review and assign new CPS reports.

    • Co-manage and Facilitate monthly PIC meetings.

    • Review safety decisions with CPS workers and consult with Supervisor or Program Manager as needed.

    • Provide evening PIC coverage and fill in during supervisor absences. Assist with planning and safety coordination during after-hours shifts.

    • Handle high-profile and conflict cases as needed.

  • Temporary Lodging (TL):

    • Participate in Temporary Lodging Staffing’s.

    • Facilitate and document information gathered during daily certification and placement meetings.

    • Support facilitation of Temporary Lodging scheduling and associated task approval processes.

  • Training:

    • Provide Mandatory Reporter Training to community partners.

    • Facilitate weekly on call orientations.  

What you need to qualify

  • A bachelor’s degree in human services or a field related to human service, or

  • A bachelor’s degree unrelated to Human Services and either:

    • One year of Human Services related experience, or

    • Completion of coursework equivalent to certification consistent with Oregon Caseworker Competency, or

  • An associate degree and either:

    • Two years of Human Services related experience, or

    • One year of Human Services related experience and related training, coursework, or certification consistent with Oregon Caseworker Competency.

Essential attributes

We are looking for candidates with experience:

  • Experience Successfully organizing, prioritizing caseloads, and adapting to evolving circumstances and time constraints.

  • Experience conducting work that requires significant attention to detail, especially when managing multiple competing priorities at once.  

  • Experience in crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and behavior management.

  • Experience providing guidance to staff including training, mentoring, and assigning tasks to staff.

  • Experience using trauma informed practices that are inclusive of the child and family’s language, race, and culture.

  • Experience interviewing children and adults to gather information which may include having difficult conversations including sensitive information.

  • Experience presenting complex information to clients, co-workers, law enforcement and in court in a clear and concise manner.

  • Written communication skills, including writing in plain language with minimal spelling and grammar issues.
