JOB SUMMARY

This job is located in the Investigations Division of the Oklahoma City Police Department within the City of Oklahoma City and is under the direction of an immediate supervisor. The primary purpose of the Property Crimes Specialist is to respond to non-emergency calls for police service such as property, public nuisance, or vandalism crimes, etc., that do not require the presence of a commissioned police officer. Essential job functions include: conducting initial criminal investigations in the field and/or over the telephone; completing crime incident and/or supplemental information reports; interviewing crime victims and witnesses; and performing basic crime scene evidence retrieval processes such as collecting latent fingerprints, swabbing for DNA, collecting and packaging potential evidence, taking crime scene photographs, and introducing evidence or testifying in court. The position incumbent has regular contact with an immediate supervisor, sworn law-enforcement personnel and citizens who may be angry and disgruntled or may have been victimized. Assignments are received from an immediate supervisor both verbally and in writing. The work products are reviewed by a supervisor or technical staff for overall quality, accuracy, and adherence to departmental policies and procedures.

VETERANS PREFERENCE

Honorably discharged veterans of the United States Active Duty Armed Forces, National Guard, and Reserve Forces who are not currently employed full-time by the City of Oklahoma City and who meet the qualifications for the position shall be given preference. To receive preference, veterans must submit verification of honorable discharge from the United States military service (Department of Defense Form DD214 or NGB Form 22) prior to the closing date of the vacancy announcement.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 

Arm/hand steadiness and balance enough to utilize equipment and perform basic crime scene processing techniques. Strength to lift, carry or push and pull equipment or property weighing up to 50 pounds. Near vision to read and write reports, collect and process fingerprints and/or other evidence. Speech and hearing enough to communicate in person, by telephone or over radio.
