Main Purpose of Job

This position has full responsibility for the group life program during specified shifts, to include planning and scheduling work assignments of other employees working directly with youth. This includes first-line supervisors. This position is responsible for standards of performance and continuity of training of assigned personnel and with their adherence to facility and departmental policies. The position is assigned a regular shift but may be required to work other shifts, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays as required by staffing needs. The incumbent may be subject to call-in based on staffing needs.\r

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:�Graduation\r
from an accredited high school or possession of high school equivalency\r
certificate.\r
\r
Experience:�Four\r
years of experience providing supervision and guidance to youth in a juvenile\r
facility or juvenile services community program for at-risk youth.\r
\r
Notes:\r

The education and certification requirements are set by the Maryland\r
Correctional Training Commission in accordance with the Correctional Services\r
Article, Section 8-209, Annotated Code of Maryland.\r
\r
2. Candidates may substitute possession of an Associate of Arts degree in\r
Criminal Justice or the social or behavioral sciences from an accredited\r
college or university or sixty credit hours from an accredited college or\r
university, including 15 hours in criminal justice or the social or behavioral\r
sciences for one year of the required experience.\r
\r
3. Candidates may substitute possession of a Bachelor's degree in Criminal\r
Justice or the social or behavioral sciences from an accredited college or\r
university for two years of the required experience.\r

4.�Candidates may substitute U.S.\r
Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in\r
Correctional Officer classifications or Correctional Officer specialty codes in\r
the Miscellaneous Occupations field of work on a year-for-year basis for the\r
required experience.�\r

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The\r
ideal candidate will have three years' experience supervising employees in the\r
performance of work in a secure juvenile setting.\r

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

\r
1.Candidates who have not already done so must complete and successfully pass the Entrance Level Correctional Training Course for DJS staff required for the Maryland Correctional Training Commission certificate within 365 days of initial appointment or placement in this classification according to Code of Maryland Regulations Employees are required to maintain certification while employed.\r
2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.\r
3.�Employees in this classification that are employed at DJS Youth Centers may be required to complete a Board approved medication technician training program and possess a valid Maryland Board of Nursing (MBON) certification as a Medication Technician.\r

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. In accordance with the Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209�of the�Annotated Code of Maryland,�the Maryland Correctional Training Commission shall establish the minimum qualifications for probationary or permanent appointment of a Department of Juvenile Services employee in a mandated position. These requirements are listed in detail in the Code of Maryland Regulations , general regulations of the Maryland Correctional Training Commission, and include:�\r

Must be at least 21 years of age\r
A thorough background check, including fingerprinting and drug testing\r
An oral interview, and\r
Physical and psychological examinations.\r
