We are in search of a dependable and meticulous Assistant Controller to aid in the preparation of financial statements that comply with regulatory and accounting standards. Under the supervision of our Controller, this position involves identifying and correcting discrepancies, as well as helping to implement efficient control systems. In partnership with the Controller, the role includes preparing and reviewing financial statements and reports for the entire Houston First group of companies. The Assistant Controller will also help oversee workflow and internal controls within the Finance & Administration department and across the organization.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Assures that proper accounting controls are in place and effective at maintaining appropriate fiscal stewardship of Houston First Corporations (HFC) resources
Completes all assigned cyber fraud training within two weeks of assignment
Assures that all staff supervised by this job title complete all assigned cyber fraud training within two weeks of assignment
Supervises the monthly closing (both HFC and City's Convention and Entertainment
Facilities Department), review and post all the general ledger and consolidating entries
Supervises and trains staff on revenue recording, which includes cash/check deposits, event deposits, and payment recording, dispute resolution of credit card charge backs and receivable collection
Supervises invoicing of tenant, calculating/update rent amount based on the lease agreement and collecting rent payments
Supervises and trains staff on all balance sheet account analysis and review, research, and correct errors on a monthly basis
Supervises/leads the Capital Planning Process (annual and multi-year)
Preparation of the annual financial report including statements and footnotes in accordance with GASB requirements
Coordinates the external audit and acts as liaison for both HFC and the City's Convention and Entertainment Facilities Department's audits
Assists with the preparation and review of various management reports including but not limited to MFOR, internal and external dashboards for HFC Accountability
Reports and capital asset reports, and budget versus actual reports including the research of variances
Assists with the preparation of the revenue budget for HFC and the City's Convention and Entertainment Facilities Department (CEFD).
In collaboration with the Controller, supervises the accounting (both revenue and expenditure) of the SB 1057 project
Assists in maintaining the event booking system, monitors the GL mapping and GL download, trains staff on the system.
Maintains the chart of accounts
Maintains the ledger open /close calendars
Assists with treasury functions, including managing cash balances of bank accounts.
Stays current with accounting guidelines and publications (e.g., GASB) to assist with the identification and implementation of standards relevant to HFC
Performs/gathers industry and/or market research to support the successful completion of duties/projects
Supervises financial forecasting and spreadsheet modeling work including updates and reviews
Other duties and special projects as needed

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's Degree in Accounting
8 years experience in accounting (including financial statement preparation and auditing work experience), with 5 years overall in a supervisory role
CPA designation preferred
ERP system experience

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Computer literacy with proficiency in MS Office products such as Word and Excel

Understand the ethical standards and need for the confidential use of information utilized in the execution of the duties.
Counseling skills
Effective communication including oral, written, and listening skills
Ability to motivate the team to produce quality work in tight timeframes
Effective communication skills, being clear and persuasive and when dealing with others in the organization
Experience in Microsoft Dynamics preferred
Experience in Ungerboeck event software preferred
