Position Overview:
The Applied Technology Engineer is responsible for identifying and implementing improvements to current manufacturing processes. Projects will focus on redesigning equipment for improved equipment life and process throughput. Work will include seeing projects through to successful installation. Must have the ability to evaluate data and make meaningful first-hand observations in an industrial environment. Must be able to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams at multiple manufacturing sites. This position reports to the Applied Technology Manager and can be based in either Eagan, MN or Tampa, FL.


Critical Success Criteria:

  • Apply engineering principles to design of manufacturing equipment.
  • Develop working knowledge of existing processes and leverages both internal and external subject matter experts to advance projects.
  • Effectively lead equipment design projects by creating and/or reviewing designs and managing project deliverables through commissioning.
  • Work safely in lab and manufacturing environments and sets an example by following EHS procedures and looking for opportunities to keep all employees safer.
  • Identify, evaluate, and implement new technology into the manufacturing process.


Responsibilities:

  • Develop designs, project budgets, installation specifications, and commissioning plans for new equipment.
  • Maintain understanding of business needs as they relate to project priority and timeline. Delivers on-time, functional equipment to internal customers.
  • Update documentation (P&IDs, PFDs, equipment drawings etc.) when equipment modifications or replacements take place. Field verifies existing documentation of current equipment and makes updates as needed. Works with internal or external drafting resources or makes updates personally.
  • Work closely with the plant Process Engineers, Reliability Engineers, Maintenance Engineers, and department managers/supervisors. Solicits input and builds consensus for upcoming changes.
  • Attend consortium meetings, conferences, vendor presentations, and training courses to gather information about opportunities for continuous improvement. Communicates new opportunities to internal stakeholders.
  • Perform and documents experiments and/or equipment trials as needed to determine if proposed solutions are viable.


Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related discipline from an accredited College or University.
  • At least 2 years of full-time experience in an engineering discipline OR completed post-graduate degree in related discipline. Experience directly supporting manufacturing or working in a manufacturing environment is preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to promote a positive team atmosphere and support a continuous improvement culture.
  • Has good self-motivation, ability to work well under time pressure, sense of urgency, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to travel to sister plant up to 25%.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience directly supporting manufacturing or working in a manufacturing environment is preferred, but not required.
  • Proficiency with 2D and 3D CAD software (Inventor, SolidWorks, or similar) preferred, but not required.
  • Previous experience with generating, updating, and organizing engineering documentation such as P&IDs, PFDs, and equipment drawings preferred, but not required.
  • Previous experience working with Machine Shops for equipment/part fabrication and 3rd party Engineering Designers preferred, but not required.
  • Previous experience with project management software (Microsoft Project or similar) preferred, but not required.
  • Previous experience working in a mining and/or metals environment preferred, but not required.
