Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) seeks an experienced leader to serve as the next General Counsel. This position reports to the President and is a member of the President's cabinet.


The General Counsel serves as the chief legal officer for the University of Nevada, Reno, providing expert legal advice and counsel to senior academic and administrative officers.

This position encompasses a broad scope of responsibilities, including litigation, administrative and regulatory matters, both within the State of Nevada and at the federal level.

The General Counsel ensures compliance with state and federal laws, focusing on litigation, contracts, business and tort law, employment law, dispute resolution, discrimination, intellectual property, student rights, the First Amendment, public records, and public/private partnerships.

The General Counsel provides legal counsel and guidance to university officers and upper management, anticipating and identifying legal issues.

They advise the President, Provost, and senior leaders to develop strategies and solutions, ensuring alignment with the university's mission and strategic goals.

Additionally, they develop strategies to mitigate risks, implementing compliance and risk management programs, and advise university leadership on governance matters, ensuring compliance with higher education regulations.


The General Counsel oversees and manages all university litigation, representing UNR senior leaders in judicial and administrative proceedings and negotiations.

They assess legal risks and advise on appropriate courses of action, resolving disputes to minimize risk and liability to the university.


The General Counsel reviews and negotiates contracts, leases, and other legal documents, ensuring compliance with Board of Regents requirements and applicable laws.

They also provide training and guidance on university policies and legal issues to faculty, staff, and administrators.


The General Counsel establishes and maintains an effective organizational structure for the Office of General Counsel, overseeing recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluation of legal staff.

They develop and manage the legal function's budget, select and retain outside counsel as needed, and oversee the legal work of university attorneys, paralegals, and outside counsel.

Additionally, they foster a collaborative and supportive work environment.


The Office of General Counsel is part of the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Office of Legal Affairs, which operates under the executive leadership of the NSHE Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs and Chief General Counsel.

The General Counsel has a dual reporting line to the NSHE Chief General Counsel.

Required Qualifications


Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school and 10 years of legal experience in civil practice, including litigation, contracts and working in a university setting or public institution.

Familiarity with academic governance, research compliance, and intellectual property law.

Licensure

Licensure to practice law in the State of Nevada

We offer excellent health insurance options that include dental, vision, and life insurance.

We take the health of our employees and their families seriously.

This position starts the first year with a generous thirty (30) days of sick leave; two (2) days are accrued each month after one year of service.

For candidates that relocate from at least 50 miles away, we offer a relocation/moving allowance. No receipts are required, and the moving allowance is paid in one lump sum.

If you or your dependents are looking to become a Wolf Pack student, we offer a grants-in-aid educational benefit. The University is proud to provide a reduced-rate tuition benefit to faculty and qualified dependents.

Faculty can take up to six credits per semester at a reduced rate.

Dependents of faculty have unlimited credits, but in order to be eligible children must be unmarried and under the age of 24 and must receive at least 50% of their financial support from the employee and/or employee's spouse or domestic partner.
