Job Description

The Pre-Med Learning Specialist with the School of Medicine's Office of Admissions plays an instrumental role in fostering self-directed learning among pre-med students, aligning with our mission to enhance the quality, diversity, and quantity of medical school applicants. This position provides pre-med students with the information, strategies and guidance necessary to develop the academic competencies and skills needed to prepare for and thrive as future medical students. Responsibilities include one-on-one advising, motivational coaching, and developing tailored strategies to support student success. This position oversees day-to-day operations for structured pre-med pathway programs administered by the School of Medicine and the cultivation of a community of self-directed learners. This position has primary responsibility for developing resources that support students in their preparation for the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) and shares responsibility for development and delivery of any required courses for pathway programs, the development of orientation and special events, and the tracking of pathway student data. Other responsibilities include supporting admissions processes and participation in outreach events to inspire, educate, and/or recruit prospective pathway or medical students. This position is supervised by the Pathway Programs Coordinator and works closely with pre-med students, the Disability Resource Center, UNR Counseling Services, course instructors, and teaching faculty.

Responsibilities include:

• Instruction in learning methodologies, general and MCAT-specific, implemented through the delivery of courses, workshops or presentations/information sessions to introduce pre-med students to critical thinking and reasoning competencies
• Student coaching including direct individual learning plan meetings and progress tracking
• Engagement with partners to offer holistic support to pre-med students
• Program operations as related to delivery of pathway program operations and data tracking and reporting

The Pre-Med Learning Specialist works closely with the UNR Med Pathway Programs Coordinator, the UNR Med Assistant Dean of Admissions, and other related positions to offer holistic academic and student support for learners throughout their pre-med experience.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to provide theoretically sound learner support for a wide variety of learning styles and across a pre-medical education curriculum. They will have the ability to work independently and in collaboration with others to support holistic student success. They will have observational and interpersonal skills that allow for early identification of learner challenges and the ability to build rapport and develop trust to offer ongoing support and learning strategy guidance.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree and two years of related work experience OR

Master's Degree and one year of related work experience

Related experience: in academic or student support services, teacher, tutor, or instructional coach

This position requires occasional travel and a variable schedule due to evening and weekend events

The total compensation package includes a competitive salary, moving allowance (if applicable), a rich retirement plan, health insurance options that include dental and vision, life insurance, thirty (30) days of sick leave provided upon start date and two (2) days of sick leave accrued per full month after the first year of service, two (2) days of annual leave accrued each full month, along with many other benefits.
