Scope of Position

  • The Divisional Music & Worship Arts Director (DMWAD) is responsible for the development, promotion, and administration of evangelistic arts within the Cascade Division.
  • The DMWAD will be required to represent The Salvation Army officially on behalf of the DSP. In connection with this requirement, the following expectations will apply:
  • The DMWAD is expected to be a uniform wearing salvationist committed to and supportive of the holistic Christian mission and ministry of The Salvation Army.
  • The DMWAD will provide leadership in music and arts ministries and events conducted by the division. Pastoral care for music and other arts leaders across the division will be a regular part of this individuals' role and responsibilities.
  • The DMWAD will work alongside the rest of the Program Department and any other department that requests support.
  • The DMWAD is expected to encourage growth and maintaining the presence of music and worship arts groups across the division.

Requirements, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Schedule

Specific Requirements

  • Sole Responsible for the planning of the following Divisional Events:
  1. Divisional Encore
  2. Music Camp.
  3. Divisional Music Day - Westside and Eastside
  • Put together music / worship arts ensembles as requested by DSP and / or Divisional Leaders.
  • Willingness to travel 40% of the time. - Across the Division or for Territorial Special Events as assigned.

Knowledge Required

  • Knowledge of TSA Music Programs and resources.
  • Biblical knowledge and ability to lead devotions/prayer regularly.
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Have a higher understanding of teaching and leading various music / worship arts ensembles or groups.
  • Use traditional office practices and procedures; read, write, and speak the English language to express ideas and communicate professionally and effectively.
  • Use a computer effectively in the working environment; use standard office machines (e.g., copier, multi-line telephone, labeler, laminating machine).
  • Keyboarding experience, proficient in Word, Excel, Publisher, Canva, and PowerPoint.

Skills Required

  • Able to demonstrate knowledge and experience in all expressions of worship in The Salvation Army.
  • Must possess strong written and oral communication skills to interface effectively with individuals and groups whether inside or outside of the Salvation Army system.
  • Highly skilled in music and/or arts performance and leadership.

  • Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office software (primarily Outlook, Word, Excel, Publisher, and PowerPoint) software to manage multiple calendars correctly, manage and create documents, reports, and presentations.

Schedule

  • With the Supervisor's approval, establish a standard workweek taking into consideration the essential duties of this position, the mission of the department, and of the Salvation Army.
  • The work of exempt employees is not measured solely by hours work. Employees in exempt positions are expected to work the hours necessary to complete assignments on a schedule that satisfies the requirements of the job and assigned duties. A full-time commitment typically requires a minimum of 80 hours per bi-weekly pay period.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Administrative

  • Serve as ex-officio member of any divisional committees pertaining to music (e.g., divisional music committee, music camp planning committee, calendar planning committee, etc.) The DMWAD may be designated chairperson or secretary, at the discretion of the divisional commander.
  • Music Camp
    1. Recruit and select instructional staff. This list must be approved by the DC and/or DSP.
    2. Organize curriculum, daily schedules, manuals, etc.
    3. Secure special guests for events. This must be approved by the DC and/or DSP.
    4. Organize and chair the Music and Worship arts camp planning committee.
  • Keep an up-to-date appraisal of the musical and worship arts activities within the division in order to obtain an overview of their progress.
  • Divisional Music and Worship Arts Day: be responsible for planning, organizing, and promoting.
  • Handle all office responsibilities as they pertain to the music and worship arts department, such as correspondence, record keeping and filing.
  • Serve as consultant to ongoing programs in the division as needed.
  • Encourage and supervise the commissioning of all eligible musicians within the division by reviewing current corps lists of memberships for all music groups at least annually.
  • Maintaining mailing lists of all musicians, music leaders, worship arts leaders and other interested parties within the division.
  • Organize and maintain a divisional music and worship arts resource library.
    1. Band music.
    2. Vocal music.
    3. Musicals and dramas.
    4. Music camp materials.
    5. Solo and ensemble music.
    6. Accompaniment library (publications and recordings).
    7. Music education and leadership materials.
    8. Congregational praise and worship music resources.
  • Be responsible for the prompt distribution to corps of music-related materials from THQ and DHQ.
  • Disseminate information and resources for the development, promotion and publicity of music and worship arts programs through a regularly published (or on an as-needed basis) newsletter.
  • Responsible for AV operation and equipment for Divisional Events. Included operation and transport of sound systems, preparation of PowerPoint and Media Shout presentations.
  • Organize and support music needs for Divisional Events (see Departmental Specific Responsibilities for a list).
  • Use Corps Management Software and site-visits to keep apprised of all music and arts programs across the division and strategize to grow the size of these programs.

Leadership Development and Training

  • Ensure that every music and arts educator is equipped and prepared to share the hope they have (1 Peter 3:15 - Your heart should be holy and set apart for the Lord God. Always be ready to tell everyone who asks you why you believe as you do. Be gentle as you speak and show respect.)
  • Promotion of instrumental, vocal and worship arts programs throughout the division.
  • Visit corps on a regular basis to develop and encourage local leadership; serve as a resource person, available to guest conduct corps rehearsals and provide special music at services and meetings.
  • Plan and implement leadership seminars, workshops, and institutes on a corps regional divisional and music camp level.
  • Identify prospective leaders within the division and involve them in the above learning experiences.
  • Identify and establish goals and objectives in the development of leadership within the division.
  • Works with the territorial music & worship arts secretary in carrying out the objectives of territorial leadership training.
  • Organize the divisional music and worship arts committee, which should meet at least twice annually. The DMWAD is an ex-officio member and may be designated to serve as chairperson or secretary.

Performance

  • Supervise/Conduct divisional band and divisional youth band.
  • Supervise/Conduct divisional youth chorus.
  • Coordinate special ensembles for public events when needed and requested by divisional administration (e.g., Christmas Ensembles, United Way and Media Events, Annual Dinners, Parades, and other special observances, etc.)
  • Coordinate Divisional Worship Team for Divisional Events, as requested.
  • Oversee development of divisional worship arts groups, e.g., i.e., drama troupe, mime, dance, etc.
  • Encore: coordinate, resource, plan, and implement.

Evaluation of Corps/Divisional Music Worship Arts Programs

  • Identify the needs of corps music and worship arts programs within the division.
  • Develop plans and programs to meet these needs.

Coordination of Division Music and Worship Arts Events

  • Organize and rehearse music used at Divisional Youth Retreats, and other Divisional Events.
  • Host visiting musical and worship arts groups, arranging for food, lodging, etc.

Territorial Music and Worship Arts Programs

  • Support corps and divisional participation in territorial events (i.e., WMI, Music and Worship Seminar).

Accountability

  • Prepare and submit an annual budget to supervisor.
  • Prepare and submit a budget for all Divisional Leaders to see into TSAMM.
  • Submit work plan or itinerary at the beginning of each month to supervisor.
  • Submit a program year work plan at the beginning of each program year to the supervisor.

General

  • Other duties as assigned.

Departmental Specific Responsibilities

Divisional Events

Under the guidance of the Divisional Secretary for Program, work in planning divisional music, brief of event, event program, venue reservation, decorations, plan meals, plan giveaways, hospitality baskets and gifts for special guests, housing, registration, and logistics for each event. Will be responsible for putting together ensembles (e.g., brass, vocal, drama, worship teams, etc.) for various Divisional Events upon request. Keep digital records of all files, invoices, briefs, programs etc. for future reference.

  • The Divisional events that may require support from the Divisional Music and Worship Arts Director are, but not limited to:

Qualifications

Education

  • REQUIRED
    1. Bachelor of Arts or Sciences Degree in Music, Theatre, Art, and / or Education.
    2. Two to Five Years of Practical experience in the music field.
    3. Demonstrated understanding of music and worship arts, in relation to worship and development of corps programs.
    4. Demonstrated knowledge of music technology, e.g., sound and PA equipment.

Experience

  • REQUIRED
    1. Active, uniform-wearing Salvationist.
    2. Ability to effectively plan and manage events, from start to finish. This involves creating a timeline, setting the budget, and managing the logistics of the event and coordinating people.
    3. Pastoral Experience.
    4. Experienced musician and teacher with a successful record of teaching and developing Salvation Army musical and worship arts focus.
    5. Work effectively with people and follow the instructions of superiors.
    6. Self-motivated and work with limited supervision.
    7. Proficient Worship Leader.
    8. 3-5 years of experience planning, programing and implementing large scale programs.

General Qualifications

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Access to adequate internet connection for online teaching.
  • Reliable means of transportation.
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Computer literate in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Publisher) required.
