It's tough to make predictions, especially about the future, Yogi Berra once said. Yet prediction is what Bank of America s 80-person Consumer Behavior Modeling team does every day, tackling big problems like which card accounts will default or how many depositors will open investment accounts. Success in solving problems like these translates into customer delight, smart risk management, and responsible growth.

We are seeking junior level Data Scientists/Consumer Behavior Modelers who can select the right problems to work on; who can articulate to peers and decision makers what will change as a result of a model's predictions; who can draw a direct line between data and customer value; who can document their work so it is understood and reproduced well into the future even as it adapts to fast-breaking technological and economic change.

Our modeling team offers compelling professional opportunities. We work on some of the largest, most varied, and most important data in the world. The mathematical sophistication of our models extends to advanced and even research-level approaches. We implement our models and track their performance with multivariate statistical process controls. We continually train on the latest and most powerful tools. We work across all products and across all the stages of the customer lifecycle.

For example, our models:

  • Set credit limits for over 12% of the country s credit card balances,
  • Optimize marketing and investment decisions to improve the customer experience for 67 million consumer and small business clients,
  • Correct for significant selection bias caused by having performance data on approved accounts only.
  • Candidates who have deep skills in modeling and excellent communication skills are invited to apply.

Role Summary and Key Responsibilities:
Responsible for understanding statistical modeling requirements expressed in a technical language and executing per a specified plan to a specified timeline. Presents and communicates facts clearly and accurately with manager and peers. Efficiently examines and cleans large data sets, builds basic multivariate statistical models, formats code clearly, and produces correct documentation. Correctly knows statistical assumptions and makes logical inferences. This role is an individual contributor and reports to the Consumer Behavior Modeling Manager.

Generally responsible for creating parts of technical plans from requirements expressed in a non-technical language and delivering components. Successful candidates will to large degree be able to:

  • Understand nuanced communication; adjust to the tone of the room; effectively structure communication; speak clearly and effectively to multiple stakeholders including skip-level manager; manage technical aspects of projects
  • Create logically structured documents with correct grammar and clear formatting
  • Understand the structure and purpose of our work streams; learn how our business clients work; plan parts of projects and keep track of relevant details
  • Independently derive the correct lessons from raw data; balance well the competing needs of the model development lifecycle
  • Master the standard capabilities Python
  • Write efficient computer code using white space, comments, indentation, arrays, control blocks, and modularization
  • Build datasets from complex data warehouses
  • Understand important parts of our data flows

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in statistics or related field, such as econometrics, engineering, applied mathematics, the applied sciences, or other heavily quantitative disciplines or equivalent experience
  • 0-7 years directly relevant experience
  • Python programming
  • Proficient in modern modeling methods
  • Demonstrated ability to speak and write clearly and concisely to convey complex data to a non-technical audience
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both in a team environment and independently
  • Self-motivation, self-direction, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities without sacrificing quality or timelines
