The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. The creative problem solvers in Liberty Mutual's Insights & Solutions group harness the power of data, analytics and technology to develop innovative solutions that drive our US Retail Markets business forward and support a high-performing culture. This group brings together highly talented thinkers and doers ready to challenge the status quo and make an impact. As a member of this cross-functional group, you'll collaborate with teams across Liberty Mutual to deliver analysis that unlocks insights and sparks new, better ways of working.

The Small Commercial Product Design and Modeling team within US Retail Markets Data Science is hiring a front-line manager. Underwriting models are a high profile and exciting area where we are able to apply creative problem-solving skills to have a considerable impact on business results. This role will lead a team of data scientists using underwriting models to dramatically improve the results of the Small Commercial portfolio.

This manager will have an opportunity to work with highly talented professionals to develop solutions to complex problems, delivering predictive tools and insights, to include ongoing monitoring of metrics and initiatives. Integral to the position is creative problem solving and a mindset of viewing everything as possible while creating an environment where the team loves to work. In this role, you can expect to:
  • Manage and develop a team of data scientists in advanced predictive modeling projects across Small Commercial product lines.
  • Develop modeling strategy for comprehensive UW program across the policy life cycle.
  • Provide thought leadership and data-driven recommendations to inform product design decisions in collaboration with internal stakeholders, and communicate vision to senior leaders.
  • Establish project plans, ensure quality deliverables within agreed upon timeframes.
  • Regularly engage with the data science community and leads cross-functional working groups.
The ideal candidate will have:
  • Proven math and analytical skills, as typically acquired through the pursuit of an FCAS or Master's degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Actuarial Science or related field.
  • Strong background in Statistical Learning. Must be familiar with the use of statistical modeling software (Python, Emblem, Earnix etc.) with the ability to build models of moderate complexity.
  • Understanding of insurance operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to exchange ideas and convey complex information clearly and concisely to technical and business leaders, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and apply independent judgment and well-developed critical thinking skills in management of assignments and projects.
  • Aptitude for effective, innovative problem solving within and across functional groups.
  • Ability to establish and build effective relationships within and outside the organization.
Qualifications
  • Responsible for management, technical oversight and development for a team of data science and advanced analytics staff, which may include subordinate managers.
  • Collaborates with business partners to develop tools and services such as modeling, dashboard development, and decision aids to drive strategic decision making.
  • Presents findings, shares insights, and makes recommendations that impact profitability, growth and/or customer satisfaction.
  • Responsible for highly technical, individualized and difficult to develop tools which are transformative in nature and have broad strategic impact to the aligned business unit.
  • Provides strategic input on highly technically complex projects that drive change across function, SBU or Corporate Department.
  • Directs work through others and may perform highly complex, technical and creative predictive analytics projects.
  • Shapes the data science community and leads cross functional working groups.
