Science Engagement Mentor Internship - Collegiate

Museum of Science, Boston

PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

This internship opportunity is facilitated through the Research & Development sector, within the Museum's Exhibits, Research, and Collections division.

The Research & Development sector integrates contemporary scientific research themes into the museum experience by conducting investigations to enhance our understanding of how visitors engage with science museums. The insights gained from these studies are utilized to craft enjoyable, interactive, and impactful learning experiences for individuals of all ages. Team members in this sector contribute to the design and assessment of innovative exhibits, programs, or digital resources spanning a wide array of scientific disciplines.

The Research & Development sector also manages the Museum's Living Laboratory initiative, wherein museum personnel collaborate with scientists from the Greater Boston area to provide guests with opportunities to partake in cognitive and behavioral science research during their museum visits. Through the Living Laboratory, the department offers professional development aimed at equipping our research partners to effectively communicate their methodologies and findings to the public.

This department oversees a comprehensive work-based training program that introduces high school students to informal STEM education and research methodologies. In partnership with staff from the Museum's Content Development and Research & Evaluation teams, this program offers year-round, mentored work experiences for approximately 20 teenage staff and interns annually.

INTERNSHIP SUMMARY:

The Science Engagement Mentor Internship provides essential training and hands-on experience in science communication, educational outreach, and mentorship capabilities.

The intern will assist in the daily operations of the Living Laboratory, engaging directly with the Museum's external research collaborators, offering logistical assistance to researchers on-site, and developing educational resources that elucidate the inquiries and methodologies of ongoing research studies for the public. The intern will support Research and Development personnel in training and mentoring novice researchers in effective science communication practices, facilitate Living Laboratory activities within the exhibit areas during public hours, and perform administrative duties such as tracking engagement metrics and preparing research support materials.

The Science Engagement Mentor Intern will play a role in the creation and evaluation of new Museum experiences (e.g., exhibits, programs, and digital offerings), assisting Research and Development staff who provide training and mentorship to high school students (youth staff and interns) working within the department. The intern will engage in the development and testing of interactive educational prototypes with visitors, recruit and gather data from Museum attendees, and support staff in disseminating research findings to both professional and public audiences. The intern will collaborate closely with a team of research, development, evaluation, and education professionals dedicated to crafting enjoyable and engaging exhibit-based science learning experiences for the public.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in the integration of human subjects research into the Museum experience by engaging in daily interactions with Living Laboratory research volunteers, creating educational materials (e.g., handouts detailing research studies), and providing logistical support (e.g., maintaining spaces, tracking engagement metrics).
  • Support full-time staff in delivering training in science communication and educational practices to youth staff and interns, under the guidance of personnel in Exhibits, Research, and Collections.
  • Acquire and apply skills necessary for developing innovative Museum experiences, which may involve researching scientific topics, drafting storyboards, scripts, or exhibit text, prototyping and refining hands-on interactives, and documenting development processes.
  • Learn and practice skills required for evaluating new Museum experiences, which may include recruiting and collecting data from Museum visitors, analyzing quantitative and qualitative data, and drafting reports of findings.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student or graduated within the past year.
  • Demonstrated interest in informal science education (or science communication), through academic coursework or professional experience.
  • Strong interest and/or background in science, engineering, cognition, or education.
  • Proven communication skills (both written and verbal).
  • Highly motivated, reliable, and adaptable.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage with individuals of all ages, with experience working with young children preferred.

INTERNSHIP DETAILS:

This internship offers valuable benefits, including free parking, close proximity to public transportation, complimentary admission, discounts in the Museum store and café, and additional perks.

The Museum of Science is an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without discrimination based on gender, race/ethnicity, protected veteran status, disability, or any other protected group status.
