Position # Requisition Job Summary

The Department of Family Medicine's Medical Director provides clinical leadership to the ambulatory hospital-based AF Williams Family Medicine Practice. The Medical Director partners with the UCHealth Practice Administrator at AF Williams, the UCHealth Director of Primary Care Operations, the residency program director, and the Department of Family Medicine Clinical Affairs Team in the delivery of high-quality clinical care, productive clinical operations, and a positive work environment for faculty and staff. The AF Williams Family Medicine Medical Director provides direct leadership and supervision to clinical faculty at the practice.

The clinician (MD or DO) in this position will function as a family medicine physician in a family medicine clinic, providing high quality medical care and supervising fellows, residents and students as needed.

Examples of Work Performed

This position is a full-time, FTE position: .40 FTE Support for Medical Director/Director of Residency Clinic duties to include a stipend and cFTE doing continuity clinic work, including maintaining a continuity panel of patients at AF Williams Family Medicine Clinic, and 0.1 pFTE of time to precept residents. This position will participate in the holiday rotations for the clinic in which they maintain their continuity panel.

Clinical Care

  • Provide full scope direct patient care in an ambulatory clinical setting.
  • Participate as needed in chart review and clinical coding compliance activities.
  • Assist with Advanced Practice Provider Collaborative Agreements and individual APP support as required for the clinic.
  • Supervise medical students, residents, fellows and other healthcare learners.
  • Assist in administrative/clinical quality improvement functions.

Teaching and Mentoring

  • Provide education to fellows, residents and medical students during their ambulatory rotation.

Administrative/Professional Development

  • Maintain eligibility for School of Medicine Faculty.
  • Keep abreast of the latest developments in field, both academically and through applied skill.
  • Attend and present at conferences, meetings and trainings in order to maintain certification and enhance professional skills; participates in faculty development activities.

Leadership

  • Serves as the physician leader for AF Williams Family Medicine Clinic.
  • Provides leadership, vision, direction, and support to clinic administrative leadership.
  • Is the dyad partner with the Practice Administrator.
  • Serves as the clinical leader for quality initiatives and value-based care initiatives that the health system is engaged in.
  • Identifies and leverages opportunities for operational efficiencies and consistencies.
  • Along with the practice administrator, Co-Leads the clinic's routine provider meetings and staff meetings
  • Along with the residency program director, co-lead's the clinic staffing and performance of FM residents. Meets 1:1 with Program Director regularly.
  • Collaborates with the UCHealth Senior Director of Primary Care Operations and Women's Services and the Department of Family Medicine Clinical Affairs designated team members.
  • Develops and supports positive working relationships with faculty.
  • Advocates for Family Medicine faculty, staff, and patients.
  • Engages with residency operations through attendance at various residency organizational meetings (see below)

Operations

  • Establishes guiding principles for call schedules, vacation schedules, etc.
  • Attends monthly Practice Operations Management Committee (POMC).
  • Attends the bi-weekly UCH Primary Care Communication Huddles.
  • Reviews and addresses escalated patient, provider, and staff complaints.
  • Ensures provider compliance with University School of Medicine and CU Medicine policies and procedures.
  • Ensures provider compliance with UCHealth driven and CU Medicine driven initiatives to include training as needed.
  • Ensures resident provider compliance with RRC and ABFM requirements.
  • In collaboration with their clinic administration partners, assesses space and staff utilization; develops, implements, and evaluates solutions as needed.
  • Collaborates with School of Medicine and DFM education leaders to ensure mutually-beneficial integration of educational needs and clinic operations.

Quality

  • Develops, implements, and evaluates the strategy for quality improvement.
  • Participates in the monthly Office of Value Based Performance (OVBP) meeting.

Human Resources

  • Works with the DFM HR and Clinical Affairs Team to recruit new faculty.
  • Leads the OPPE/FPPE process.
  • Provides new faculty orientation and mentorship in conjunction with Department HR, the SOM, CU Medicine and Epic.
  • Develops plans for and assures compliance with advanced practice provider supervision.
  • Provides supervision for faculty in clinic, providing feedback and/or participating in Performance Improvement Plans in collaboration with DFM on issues that have escalated.
  • Serves as the connector between the leadership team and resident advisors for any patient feedback needing review with residents.
  • Conducts annual reviews in conjunction with department processes.

Financial

  • Supports DFM goals for productivity, hours, and revenue.
  • Assures stewardship of additional clinic funding, ie, RAE, Primary Care 1st.
  • Reviews clinic's financial status in coordination with UCHealth and DFM.

Meetings

The incumbent will be responsible to attend several routine meetings which include but are not limited to:

  • DFM Medical Director meetings; monthly.
  • Practice Operations Management Committee, weekly/monthly.
  • CU Medicine Office of Value Based Performance, monthly.
  • DFM Monthly Department meetings.
  • AFW Leadership Meetings, weekly
  • AFW Practice Transformation Leadership, twice monthly
  • Trifecta (AFW Leadership, DFM Leadership, UCH Leadership), monthly
  • University Track meetings, monthly
  • Core Faculty Meetings, 2-3 times monthly
  • Clinic Residency Leaders Mtg, monthly
  • 1:1 with Program Director and Practice Administrator, each monthly

Onsite - this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, CO.

Associate Professor Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Terminal degree in Medicine or Osteopathy (MD or DO). Board Certified in Family Medicine.
  • Experience: Graduation from an accredited Family Medicine Residency program and 7 years' experience working in primary care.
  • Special Skills: Ability to obtain Colorado Medical License and possession of a current DEA Certificate. Ability to be fully credentialed with the UCH system and UPI Managed Care. Ability to meet the School of Medicine's criteria for associate professor.

Professor Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Terminal degree in Medicine or Osteopathy (MD or DO). Board Certified in Family Medicine.
  • Experience: Graduation from an accredited Family Medicine Residency program and 10 years' experience working in primary care.
  • Special Skills: Ability to obtain Colorado Medical License and possession of a current DEA Certificate. Ability to be fully credentialed with the UCH system and UPI Managed Care. Ability to meet the School of Medicine's criteria for full professor.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience and enthusiasm for teaching students and/or residents
  • Experience in an integrated, advanced primary care environment
  • Experience in quality improvement and improving population-based value-based care.
  • Experience or interest in education and research and faculty development
  • Experience with using an electronic health record system, preferably Epic
  • Experience with providing Telehealth/virtual visits
  • Several years of formal or informal leadership experience in a clinical or non-clinical environment
  • Experience in supervising clinical activities of peers

Senior Instructor

The hiring range for this position has been established at $195, ,000 plus the possibility of incentives based on clinical FTE. The Medical Director position comes with a $20,000 stipend.

Assistant Professor

The hiring range for this position has been established at $195, ,000 plus the possibility of incentives based on clinical FTE. The Medical Director position comes with a $20,000 stipend.

Associate Professor

The hiring range for this position has been established at $201, ,000 plus the possibility of incentives based on clinical FTE. The Medical Director position comes with a $20,000 stipend.

Professor

The hiring range for this position has been established at $207, ,000 plus the possibility of incentives based on clinical FTE. The Medical Director position comes with a $20,000 stipend.
