About the role:

Under general supervision, assist in the performance of laboratory research and procedures by performing a variety of routine experimental techniques such as DNA/RNA extractions, PCR, Illumina library preparation, gel electrophoresis, and the like. Collect, verify, record, and compile data and information in support of designated research projects. Perform tasks supporting overall lab operations.

The Kocher Lab at Princeton University studies how genes and environment interact to generate behavioral variation. We often compare the genomes and the brains of social and solitary bee species to better understand how the 'social brain' develops and evolves. More information can be found here:

What you'll do:

  • Assist scientists and technicians by performing various research procedures and operating a variety of instruments and other scientific equipment.
  • Collect, record, organize and verify the accuracy of data; perform calculations and prepare charts, graphs, and reports. May use software applications to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and test reports.
  • Configure and operate laboratory apparatus and instruments; read and record instrument data; tabulate data; keep laboratory records.
  • May maintain inventories of chemicals, reagents, and other laboratory supplies and place orders as indicated.
  • May maintain records of hazardous materials stored in the lab.
  • May participate in performing regular maintenance for equipment.
  • Participate in laboratory meetings and planning sessions.
  • May maintain insects, plants, animals, and/or bacterial and tissue cultures for experimental purposes.
  • Maintain knowledge of current developments in research area through reading applicable literature and utilizing online resources.

In addition to the duties specifically identified by this job description, the position will include other duties if and as assigned by the direct supervisor or others with supervisory authority over this position.

  • Contributes to research results on an on-going basis. Usually conducts routine aspects of research projects. Influences short range and limited scope activities.
  • Organizes projects within workload to ensure goals are met.

What you bring:

Education

  • Bachelor of Science degree in an appropriate field or an equivalent combination of education and related work experience.

Experience

  • Some related laboratory experience preferred.

Skills and Abilities

  • Generally experienced in job duties and in the principles and practices associated with those duties with an understanding of the underlying scientific principles.
  • Ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a diverse population.
  • Ability to draft routine reports and keep accurate records of work performed.

$17.72 (minimum) – $22.16 (midpoint) – $28.77 (maximum)

HHMI's salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
