Overview

The McDonnell Teaching Lab and Murthy Lab at the Princeton Neuroscience Institute seek an experienced Drosophila specialist to manage Drosophila husbandry in both labs and act as lab manager in the teaching lab. Lab manager duties will include maintenance of a variety of animal colonies and preparation of reagents and equipment for weekly experiments. This position will also present opportunities to become involved in ongoing research projects in the teaching lab.

The ideal candidate will be energetic, detail-oriented, and broadly curious. A minimum of 3 years of prior laboratory work should demonstrate expertise in Drosophila work and strong organizational skills.

This is a one-year term position with the possibility of renewal.

Responsibilities
  • Drosophila colony management, including maintaining stock lines, setting and screening timed crosses to produce flies for experimentation.
  • Lab management, including maintaining reagents and equipment, preparing and deploying supplies necessary for student experiments that rotate each week.
  • Animal husbandry related to the maintenance of other model organisms used in the teaching lab, including zebrafish, rodents, crayfish, and other invertebrates.
  • Research support (neurophysiology, microscopy, optogenetics) when classes are not in session.


Qualifications

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in neuroscience, biology, or a related field is required.
  • At least 3 years prior experience in a laboratory setting, with duties including work with Drosophila.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in a lab manager role is highly preferred.
  • Experience with Drosophila research methods beyond husbandry.
  • Experience with husbandry of other model organisms
