Neuroscience Connectome Project Supervisor
2 weeks ago
Position Title: Connectome Annotation Manager
Overview:
The Seung & Murthy Lab at Princeton Neuroscience Institute is dedicated to pioneering research by meticulously mapping the brain. Utilizing advanced high-throughput serial electron microscopy (SEM), the lab is engaged in comprehensive imaging of various brains and nervous systems. The extensive datasets generated will facilitate the reconstruction of neuronal circuits, ultimately leading to the creation of a complete connectome, which serves as the wiring diagram of the brain. This connectome will offer an unparalleled anatomical depiction of a complex nervous system, uniquely positioned to integrate anatomical insights with functional imaging, electrophysiology, quantitative behavioral assessments, precise genetic manipulation of specific cell types, and computational modeling. We anticipate that these circuit-level reconstructions will significantly enhance our understanding of brain functionality.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee, mentor, and train a team of approximately six on-site neuron tracing specialists, alongside over thirty off-site personnel, with the potential for expanding the team based on initial success.
- Collaborate with researchers (both within Princeton and externally) focused on deciphering specific circuits and functions in Drosophila and/or mammalian brains, guiding a skilled team to identify, trace, and annotate specific neuron collections from the vast datasets produced.
- Work closely with project teams responsible for generating SEM data and developing the necessary algorithms and tools to support the team's efforts.
Qualifications:
- A Master's degree in Neuroscience is required.
- Demonstrated experience in neuroanatomy, particularly in applying electron microscopy to clarify neurobiological functions.
- Familiarity with Drosophila and/or mammalian brains and/or software for reconstructing objects from serial section images is highly desirable.
- A solid biological background, with the capability to convey scientific concepts in a clear and accessible manner, along with a willingness to learn and adapt in the role.
- The candidate should possess a strong sense of urgency and excel in a collaborative scientific environment, managing multiple tasks effectively while communicating clearly with a diverse group of collaborators.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A PhD in Neuroscience or a related field, with the ability to teach scientific concepts.
- Experience in supervising and leading teams in a dynamic research setting.
This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking research at Princeton University, fostering collaboration and innovation in the field of neuroscience.
