Rodent Behavior Technician

We are in search of a dedicated and skilled Animal Behavior Research Technician to join our team at the Princeton Neuroscience Institute, under the guidance of Dr. Carlos Brody. This role is situated within a collaborative environment focused on understanding the neural foundations of cognitive functions, utilizing rodents as a primary model organism.
The selected candidate will engage in the behavioral training of rodents and will have the chance to participate in innovative experiments that may include optogenetics, electrophysiology, and head-fixed setups. This position will involve close collaboration with graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and fellow technicians to enhance training within a high-throughput behavioral system.
Work ScheduleThis is a PART TIME position, requiring approximately 20-30 hours per week. The schedule is flexible, but candidates should be prepared for 10-hour shifts that may occur on weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
Physical RequirementsThe role necessitates a reasonable level of physical activity, including:
- Active movement while carrying weights of up to 14 lbs for durations of 45-90 minutes.
- Repetitive motion tasks such as kneeling, bending, and climbing.
- Regularly pushing and pulling large wheeled racks exceeding 50 lbs.
- Occasional lifting of 50 lbs.
Additionally, the technician must possess the dexterity to manipulate small objects, communicate effectively, and maintain awareness of the laboratory environment.
Key ResponsibilitiesThe primary responsibilities of this position include:
- Training rodents on various behavioral tasks.
- Monitoring the health and welfare of the rodents, which encompasses:
- Conducting health assessments and social interactions.
- Implementing behavior training and handling techniques.
- Performing basic husbandry tasks.
- Maintaining precise and detailed records.
- Assisting staff, students, and faculty with their needs.
- Completing other laboratory duties as assigned.
To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Ability to work in a laboratory setting while adhering to safety protocols.
- A high school diploma or equivalent, or certification as an animal technician (AALAS) or Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT).
- Willingness to handle and work with rodents regularly.
- Availability to work on weekends and holidays.
- Flexibility in scheduling to accommodate urgent laboratory needs is advantageous.
- Experience in basic soldering, computer programming, machining, or 3D printing is a plus.
- Capability to perform daily sound checks on laboratory equipment.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs comfortably.
