About This Role:

The Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music at Lamar University is seeking a highly qualified candidate for the Assistant Professor of Music (Percussion) position beginning August 2024. Candidates with enthusiasm and a vision to work with a growing department are encouraged to apply. In this position, the successful candidate will develop, sustain, and promote the percussion program with an emphasis on recruiting and retention, as well as mentoring students throughout their degree. They will also demonstrate the ability to work effectively with the department's instrumental ensembles and will participate in departmental faculty performances, specifically in collaboration with colleagues. In addition, candidates with a strong history and interest in the marching arts are encouraged to apply, as the position will include arranging for and directing all aspects of the marching band, which is an active recruitment/outreach vehicle for the department. Candidates with a background in performing and teaching a wide variety of musical genres are encouraged to apply. The faculty member in this position will be expected to establish a strong regional, national, and international reputation as a teacher and performer.
What You'll Do – Position Responsibilities
The successful candidate will lead all aspects of the percussion studio and band program percussion at Lamar University. This includes but is not limited to student recruitment, hosting annual percussion camps/clinics, maintaining a vibrant online and social media presence for the LU Percussion Studio, guiding students in academic matters through job or graduate school placement, and maintaining percussion inventory. Faculty duties include teaching applied percussion lessons, teaching studio class, arranging for and teaching the Marching Band Drumline and Front Ensemble, teaching contemporary percussion ensemble, teaching percussion methods classes and other duties as assigned by the department chair. The successful candidate will assist the department in maintaining positive relationships with area public schools and private instructors, maintain an active performance career, participate in professional organizations, creative/scholarly activity, and participate in department, college, and university service.

Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience)
What You'll Need to Succeed
Candidates who are ABD with significant experience will be considered. Artist-level performing experience in a variety of styles and genres and excellent teaching skills are expected, as is experience in performing and/or teaching percussion ensembles. Strong departmental citizenship and a cooperative attitude among colleagues, students, and staff is expected of all faculty. The candidate must be a positive advocate for the university both on and off campus. They should also demonstrate proficient verbal and written communication skills and exhibit strong organizational, management, and leadership skills.

Preferred Qualifications (Education & Experience)
  • Doctorate in Percussion Performance is preferred.
  • Successful college/university teaching experience is preferred.
