About This Role:

Lamar University seeks a visionary leader to Chair the Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music at the rank of Associate or Full Professor with appointment beginning Summer 2024. The successful candidate will develop, advocate for, expand, steer, and collaborate seamlessly with students, faculty, and administration while representing the department, the College of Fine Arts & Communication, and Lamar University. The Chair will provide dynamic leadership to an active and growing department. Responsibilities encompass leadership of music faculty, including recruiting faculty, interviewing, and evaluating; oversight of curriculum, assessment, and accreditation (NASM); management of fiscal and budgetary matters; building and inventory oversight; guiding outreach development and fundraising; and research and/or creative activities within the candidate’s area of expertise. Additional duties include student recruitment, participation in departmental, college, and university events, and other service opportunities. The department chair will have a teaching assignment of the equivalent of a six-hour course each year, usually a three-hour teaching load per long semester, assigned according to expertise and experience.

Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music The Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music is a comprehensive department within the College of Fine Arts and Communication. An important and vital link to the university and the community, the Department of Music includes 19 full-time faculty, 9 part-time faculty, and 138 students majoring in music with approximately 70% majoring in music education. The department offers Bachelor of Music degree in composition, music education, and performance; Bachelor of Arts degree; and Master of Music degree in music education (fully online) and performance.

What You’ll Do – Position Responsibilities

Ensure the coordination (inclusive of program development, program revision, and continuous program improvement) of credit and non-credit programs within their department 20%
Supervise the activities of department-assigned staff and faculty 20%
Effectively assess and address students’ needs within the department 10%
Encourage scholarly and creative activities and advocates service to the college and the community 10%
Timely and professional correspondence with program managers, managing directors, partnering administrators, and other stakeholders both on and off campus 10%
Monitor and manage the financial operations of the department programs 10%
Create and implement a plan for recruitment, retention, and time towards graduation 10%
Partner with other chairs and/or directors for other programs 5%
Evaluate faculty performance and report such evaluations to the Dean and appropriate administrators, as requested 5%

Demonstrated ability to make innovative and informed decisions, providing effective leadership in navigating complex challenges.
Leadership or related experience in developing new programs (ex. pathways with community college).
Meticulous attention to detail in successful program management, ensuring efficient execution and achievement of objectives.
Strong communication skills in presentations, oral and written formats, delivering clear and impactful messages to influence and engage key stakeholders.
Excellent analytical skills, outstanding organizational skills, and the ability to think strategically and tactfully.

Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience)
The successful candidate will have the following:
A terminal degree in music.
Earned tenure at an institution of higher education.
Proven administrative leadership skills, including oversight of a department or large program within higher education (minimum 3 years).
Demonstrated excellence in student-centered teaching; research, publication, scholarship and/or creative activities; and service.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, positively advocating for the department, college, and university both on and off campus.
Preferred Qualifications (Education & Experience)
Achieved rank of Full Professor
Full-time appointments at two or more universities
Ability to enhance and augment existing faculty areas of specialization, for example, having three or more years of K-12 teaching experience, applied instruction, etc.
