Department Summary

The Department of Athletics, utilizing the services of over 150 employees, is responsible for the intercollegiate athletics program at San Diego State University. Currently, there are 18 sport programs, approximately 550 student-athletes, and 17 offices in the department. The offices include the following: The Aztec Club/Development, Administration, Athletic Medicine, Business Office, Compliance, Communications, External Corporate Sales, Equipment, Event Management/Facilities and Operations, Human Resources, Information Technology, Marketing, Strength and Conditioning, Student-Athlete Academic Support Services, Ticket Office, and Video.

The Compliance Office's mission is based on four pillars: Education, Interpretation, Enforcement, and Oversight.

Education - Foster a culture and commitment to compliance by ensuring coaches, student-athletes, Athletics Department staff and university constituents have a clear understanding of the rules. Utilize a variety of methods and make learning the rules a positive experience. Ultimately, each person is responsible for adherence to the rules.
Interpretation - Assist constituents (student-athletes, coaches, Athletics Department staff, University staff, and representatives of athletics interests) in accomplishing their goals within the rules. Determine permissible activities utilizing resources including NCAA and conference manuals, interpretations and case precedent as well as contacts at the conference and NCAA offices. Maintain an open door/open access policy whereby coaches, staff, and other constituents are able to seek rules interpretations from the Compliance Office before they act.
Oversight – Establish and maintain comprehensive systems to protect and assist coaches, student-athletes, the Athletics Department, and the University in following the rules. Monitor the systems and those who use them. Continually evaluate and seek to improve the efficacy of systems.
Enforcement - Create an environment where allegations, investigations, and self-reports can be processed in a prompt fashion and comfortably discussed in a confidential manner. Review facts to determine whether a violation occurred, review precedent to determine the appropriate penalties to impose, and self-report all violations to appropriate constituencies.
