Job Summary: The Academic Advisor I provides guidance to University students on academic progress, courses, University resources, etc. Identifies courses to be completed in upcoming semesters. Explains University and College policies. May teach compass course as needed.


Additional Department Summary: Provides guidance and assistance to undergraduate students interested in pursuing medical school or professional health programs beyond their undergraduate degrees. Facilitates the transition from high school to professional school for students interested in health professions. Supports students in exploring relevant co-curricular opportunities, making the appropriate academic preparations, and fulfilling the requirements of their degree. Cultivates relationships with health professionals in the local community and with admissions deans at nearby medical, dental, and other health professional schools. Prepares composite recommendation letters and conducts admissions interviews with pre-professional students. Advises pre-professional student organizations. Teaches college and departmental compass courses during the academic year.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or higher.


Skills and Knowledge: Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Public speaking skills. Computer skills including word processing, spreadsheet, and/or database management. Good planning, coordinating, and organizing skills. Good analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to read and interpret policies and procedures.


Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree.
