The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Deputy Director to assist in providing leadership to one of the preeminent organizations in the world for arthritis, musculoskeletal and skin diseases research. NIAMS focuses on diseases of the bones, joints, muscles, and skin, which are major chronic health problems that impact nearly every household in America. NIAMS is the primary federal agency supporting and conducting arthritis, musculoskeletal and skin disease research. NIAMS strives to invest in research that will drive new discoveries and lead to improved public health and health care. The Institute focuses on areas with the greatest impact by prioritizing research topics showing scientific promise and amenability to rigorous scientific inquiry. As a responsible steward of resources, NIAMS is extremely selective and supports a broad range of highly meritorious basic, clinical, and translational research. The Institute also promotes the development of the next generation of scientists through training grants, travel awards, and career development workshops. To carry out its mission, NIAMS has an annual budget exceeding $685 million and a staff of approximately 250 FTEs and roughly 200 non-FTE staff. The Deputy Director serves as the second-in-command in providing strategic leadership and oversight for all aspects and components of the Institute.

This position offers a unique and exciting opportunity for a dynamic individual to assist the Director in implementing the Institute's strategic plan, managing daily operations, and serving as a champion and guarantor of the intellectual and administrative environment at the Institute. As an Institute leader, the Deputy Director will serve as an ambassador and spokesperson for NIAMS in collaborating with organizations across the nation and worldwide to incorporate the views and needs of stakeholders to advance the NIAMS mission. The Deputy Director will also facilitate the identification and development of current and future leaders and serve as a role model in managing staff and financial resources with integrity and fairness and ensuring compliance with Institute and federal policies and priorities.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: NIAMS seeks candidates who have a commitment to scientific excellence and the energy, enthusiasm, and innovative thinking necessary to lead a dynamic and diverse organization. Applicants must possess an M.D. and/or Ph.D. or equivalent in the biomedical, behavioral, or social sciences in one or more scientific areas related to arthritis, musculoskeletal, and/or skin diseases. They should be recognized and respected within their profession as individuals of outstanding scientific competence. A significant amount of experience in scientific programs of sufficient depth, scope, and complexity that demonstrates a high degree of mature, executive managerial competence and skill negotiating sensitive issues in a scientific environment is required. Broad and substantive knowledge of research programs from within NIH and/or in the research community and the respect of the scientific community are also required. Applicants must have demonstrated ability in setting, planning, implementing, and analyzing program objectives and priorities.

SALARY/BENEFITS: The Deputy Director, NIAMS, will be appointed at a salary commensurate with the selectee's qualifications and experience. A full federal benefits package including leave, health insurance, retirement, and savings plan (401K equivalent) will be provided; access to life insurance is also available. A recruitment or relocation bonus may be available, and relocation expenses may be paid.
