The Golf Course Superintendent will be responsible for the overall maintenance and management of the golf course, ensuring that it is in excellent condition for play at all times. This includes managing staff, overseeing turf management, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of warm season turfgrasses, South Texas climate and of agronomy practices for our Bermuda (ultra-dwarf putting greens) and Zoysia turfgrass management, and a proven track record in overall golf course maintenance/cultural practices.
Job Description:
- Oversee the daily operations of the golf course maintenance department.
- Develop and implement maintenance plans and schedules to ensure the golf course is in top condition with a strong focus on the course details for members' daily play.
- Manage and train a team of groundskeepers and maintenance staff.
- Monitor and maintain the health and condition of turfgrass, trees, and other plantings.
- Operate and maintain irrigation systems to ensure proper watering and drainage.
- Apply fertilizers, pesticides, and other treatments as needed, following all safety and environmental guidelines.
- Manage the maintenance budget and ensure cost-effective use of resources.
- Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations regarding golf course maintenance.
- Collaborate with other club staff to coordinate maintenance activities with golf events and other club activities.
- Maintain records of maintenance activities, chemical applications, and equipment maintenance. Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Agronomy, Horticulture, Turfgrass Management, or a related field preferred.
- Extensive knowledge of turfgrass species (especially – Bermuda Ultra-Dwarf putting greens and Zoysia fairways), pest control, soil science, and irrigation systems.
- Strong South Texas agronomic knowledge (climate, turfgrass, soil types and cultural practices)
- Preferred a minimum of 10 years of experience in golf course maintenance, with at least 5 years as a director of agronomy or golf course superintendent level position.
- Certified Golf Course Superintendent (CGCS) designation is also preferred.
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Excellent problem-solving abilities and a focused attention to details on the golf course.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with staff, members and the committee.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, as needed.
