Duties

The VA Midwest Health Care Network advocates for a Whole Health System of care in each of the Medical Centers. This is an approach to healthcare that empowers and equips people to take charge of their health and well-being and live their lives to the fullest. As an employee operating in a Whole Health System of care, you will operate in a model with three core elements, seeking to create a personalized health plan for each Veteran. This is done in the context of healing relationships and healing environments and a connection back to the Veteran's community. This aligns with the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Mission Statement to Honor America's Veterans by providing exceptional health care that improves their health and well-being.

The Chief of Staff (COS) is responsible for the management and operation of all clinical programs and services offered in the medical center, including Primary Care and Women's Health, Integrated Clinical Services, Mental Health, Medicine, Surgery, Integrated Clinical Services, Geriatrics and Extended Care, Research, Administrative Medicine, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Radiology, Pharmacy, Education, Clinical Informatics, Social Work, Community Care and Telehealth, as well as administrative responsibility for Credentialing and Privileging.

Leadership Duties:

  • The COS is a member of the ELT, which is responsible for overall leadership, policy, planning budget, operations, and performance of the health care system.
  • As the chief medical officer, the incumbent must be a skilled communicator and have an extensive record of leadership as a clinician and an educator. The COS must be skillful and knowledgeable about healthcare operations to enable him/her to successfully manage a complex tertiary care facility.
  • Working with members of the ELT, Clinical Service Chiefs, and other facility leadership, the incumbent will determine goals, priorities and direction for the clinical Services and ensure the implementation of local, VISN and national policies. The incumbent will conduct regular meetings to keep staff abreast of all clinical decisions, policies, procedures, goals, and priorities and will foster ethical decision-making. Emphasis will be placed on quality outcomes, patient satisfaction, and providing cost-effective/efficient services to the medical center's Veterans and customers.
  • Participating in the resource allocation process to include provision of sufficient number of qualified and competent persons to provide patient care and treatment, as well as necessary equipment and supplies and adequate space to provide such care and treatment.
  • The COS supervises staff as noted above and exercises full supervisory authority, either as a first- or second-line supervisor. Supervisory duties include, but are not limited to, the selection, retention, and promotion of staff; the development and completion of performance standards and appraisals; addressing grievances; applying disciplinary policies; and nominating staff for incentive awards in all matters concerning the COS Services staff.
Clinical Duties:
  • This position is predominantly administrative, but the incumbent may have up to 20% of his/her time in a clinical role consistent with his/her training and specialty.
Supervisory Controls:
  • The COS reports directly to the Medical Center Director and works closely with other members of the Executive Leadership Team.
  • The COS is expected to have sufficient expertise and experience to function independently except on very unusual occasions and is anticipated to primarily serve as a supervisor to others.

Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases

Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting

Work Schedule: Typical work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm, additional information may be provided during interview process.
