Summary:

The Deaf Studies program within the School of Arts and Humanities in conjunction with the Nuestra Casa/Center for Latine Deaf Studies, invites applications for a full-time tenure-track or tenured position in Deaf Studies with a specialization in Latine Deaf Studies. The successful candidate will be committed to establishing and launching the Latine Deaf Studies minor and be an active member of the Deaf Studies program. This is one of four positions in the Deaf Studies' cluster hire initiative to nurture, mentor, and support scholars from underrepresented backgrounds.

The Department of Deaf Studies offers a range of programs including the Deaf Studies BA, Deaf Studies BA Online Degree Completion Program (ODCP), MA in Deaf Studies, and the Deaf Studies Graduate Certificate. The Deaf Studies BA program offers a minor in Black Deaf Studies.

The Deaf Studies Department has recently received a $1.5 million dollar Mellon Foundation grant to establish the Deaf Studies Incubator. This initiative aims to support emerging scholars within collaborative space to engage with diverse methods, approaches, and sensibilities to advance meaningful research and scholarship with a global impact. The Department of Deaf Studies is affiliated with the Center for Black Deaf Studies (CBDS) and the recently established Nuestra Casa/Center for Latine Deaf Studies (Latine Deaf Studies).

Gallaudet University is located in the vibrant city of Washington, DC., home to a vibrant Latine Deaf community. The university's students and faculty have access to numerous local resources grounded in Latine culture and history. These resources include the DC Mayor's Office on Latino Affairs, Maryland Latinos Unidos, The Hispanic Institute, National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice, Hispanic Heritage Foundation, the Organization of American States, and the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Latino that is being built. The Center for Latine Deaf Studies is to support teaching, learning, and research in Latine Deaf Studies and other disciplines that benefit from more comprehensive coverage of the Latine Deaf experience, such as history, literature, psychology, sociology, and religion. Its aim is to preserve the history of the Latine Deaf community, as well as Latine Deaf education, culture, and language. Nuestra Casa is to serve as a hub for recruitment, retention, mentoring, and advising of Latine Deaf students.

Job Description:

The faculty member hired for this role will have a multi-faceted set of responsibilities encompassing three key areas: teaching, scholarship, and service, all of which are outlined in the University's Faculty Handbook. The appointed faculty member will also serve as the Director of Nuestra Casa/Center for Latine Deaf Studies. This role comes with the responsibility of leading the scholarly agenda of the center and its overall programming, including fundraising initiatives, hosting academic events such as webinars and lecturer series, and enhancing the Center's scholarly stature. The initial contract for the directorship position will be for a term of 3 years, renewable upon mutual agreement between the center and the department, based on the performance and achievements of the Director.

Teaching: Teach courses with the DST BA, DST MA/Certificate programs, and Online Degree Completion Program. In addition, faculty will engage in curriculum development and revision to ensure the highest quality Deaf Studies curriculum that reflects the diversity of deaf populations. In particular, this position will be responsible for developing and teaching courses in the Latine Deaf Studies minor.

Scholarship: Engage in research focusing on Latine Deaf Studies and scholarship that integrates intersectionality in the Deaf Studies discipline, build a strong record of scholarly accomplishment, and seek external funding to support projects designed to advance scholarship with faculty and students in the Deaf Studies program.

Service: Advise and mentor students particularly those in the Latine Deaf Studies minor, coordinate degree programs, arrange and supervise internship placements, assist with program assessment, participate in student recruitment and retention efforts; serve on Department and University committees and perform other duties as assigned.

Doctorate or other terminal degree in a relevant field of study

Demonstrated record of public dissemination of scholarly and creative work

Demonstrated knowledge & experience working with individuals with diverse educational, language, and cultural backgrounds.

Demonstrated ability to work well as an active, contributing team member of a department

Preferred Qualifications:

Candidates with background(s) in Latine, and/or Latine Studies with specializations in but not limited to Chicano/a/x Studies, Latin/Latinx/Latine American Studies, Caribbean Area Studies, Indigenous Studies, and Hispanic Cultural Studies with intersections rooted in the Deaf Studies discipline. Relevant disciplines include, but are not limited to anthropology, applied linguistics, critical race, and ethnic studies, cultural studies, disability studies, ethnography, history, literature, philosophy, sociolinguistics, or advocacy and policy.

Starting Date: August 2024

Rank and salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. Appointment will be for the regular nine-month academic year with an additional two months allocated for administrative responsibilities related to the Center.
