The Opportunity


The Chemical and Hop Laboratory supports several agency programs by analyzing samples taken in investigations of alleged pesticide misuse and analyzing feed and fertilizer samples.

The program monitors for pesticide residues in food and dairy products.

The laboratory also carries out physical grading and chemical analysis of the hop crop to ensure orderly international and domestic marketing.

The 2024 Hop Season starts mid August and typically continues through the middle of October depending on crop.


The Hop Chemistry Lab Assistant position is a temporary but important role that performs repetitive and miscellaneous tasks to prepare hop samples for brewing value, moisture, and oil content analyses during the hop harvest.

This position will require overtime work.

The typical work schedule is:
Monday - Saturday, 8am - 6pm.

Position and Salary Information

WSDA is recruiting for a full-time non-permanent Hop Chemistry Lab Assistant position within the Plant Protection Division. This position is located in Yakima, Washington and this is not a represented position.


The base pay offered will take into account internal equity and may vary depending on the preferred candidate's job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

The typical starting salary range for this position is:
$ $24.71 per hour.

Some of what you will do:

  • Hop sample preparation-
  • Receive/collect samples from Hop Inspection Lab.
  • Grind hop samples to prepare them for analysis.
  • Assist in labeling, weighing, extracting, and storing of hop samples.
  • Assist Lab Technician.
  • Clean and store lab glassware as well as other laboratory equipment.
  • Assist in the general upkeep and cleanliness of the laboratory, including but not limited to surfaces, floors, cabinets, and storage areas.

  • Ability to listen and understand directions, information and ideas presented through spoken word or writing.
  • Maintain professional working relationships.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to stand or walk most of the day with some bending, stooping, squatting twisting, and reaching.
