Johnson & Johnson is currently recruiting a Director, Issues Engagement Strategy. This position is in New Brunswick, NJ on a hybrid schedule.

Position Summary

As the Director Issues Engagement, you will lead a critical function focused on proactively identifying, analyzing, and managing emerging issues and potential risks that could impact the organization's operations, reputation, or stakeholders. In addition, you work on reactive engagement tactics that require strategic rapid responses through issues monitoring and management.

Reporting to the Vice President Global Reputation and Engagement, the Director will work closely with other leaders to ensure strategic alignment and seamless execution of our initiatives to promote, enhance and protect the J&J Innovative Medicine brand and reputation. You will also serve as the lead on management of crisis communications planning and response.

This role requires strong leadership, strategic thinking, collaboration, and exceptional communication skills to navigate complex challenges and identify opportunities to build reputational resilience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Establishes and manages a robust system for continuous monitoring of external environment, industry trends, regulatory changes, and societal issues on a global level that could impact the organization's reputation or operations.
  • Leads the identification of potential risks and issues that may arise and impact corporate reputation or business operations.
  • Develops proactive strategies to mitigate potential high-risk issues.
  • Establishes and oversees strategic plans for engaging with key global stakeholders on strategic issues across J&J Innovative Medicine.
  • Develops and implements proactive strategies and response plans for managing identified issues.
  • Sets goals and objectives for building reputational resilience aligned with J&J Innovation Medicine's narrative, mission, and public affairs strategy. Ensures issues management strategies and activities comply with relevant regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
  • Helps support relationship building efforts with stakeholders engaged on key issues: government officials, policymakers, industry associations, NGOs, advocacy groups and community leaders.
  • Aligns with Global Government Affairs team to track relevant legislation and policy developments at local, national, and international levels to manage relevant risks to the organization.
  • Advises on above-brand policy initiatives worldwide (global, region, local) that might impact J&J IM reputation.
  • Provides strategic counsel to senior leadership on crisis communications and proactive issue management. Develops and presents regular updates to senior leadership on emerging issues, risk assessments, and response strategies.
  • Collaborates with internal stakeholders, including Legal, Regulatory, Compliance and Medical teams, to assess regulatory and compliance risks associated with identified issues.
  • Collaborates with internal teams and external partners to develop campaign messaging and tactics.
  • Leads crisis response efforts, including coordination of cross-functional teams during crisis situations.
  • Conducts post-crisis analysis to identify lessons learned and opportunities for improvement.
  • Stays abreast of industry trends and advancements in issues management, crisis communications, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Anticipates potential issues and develops the strategies to mitigate or address in advance.
  • Manage direct reports and agency partners as needed.
Qualifications

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in communication or journalism preferred with liberal arts, business and political science majors/minors also considered relevant for the role.
  • 10 years of communications experience, including public affairs roles and at least 5 years' experience in crisis communications within the healthcare industry.
  • Five years team and performance management experience.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory environments and compliance considerations relevant to the pharmaceutical sector.
  • Excellent leadership and people management skills, with a demonstrated ability to lead and inspire high-performing teams to achieve strategic goals.
  • Outstanding executive presence and proven track record of building relationships as a trusted advisor. Ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex issues clearly and persuasively.
  • Strategic thinker with strong problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach to issue anticipation and resolution.
  • Excellent analytical skills with proficiency in reputation monitoring tools and data analysis techniques.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple priorities and tight deadlines effectively.
Preferred
  • Experience leading direct reports and agency partners.
  • Demonstrated success within a matrix corporate environment.
Salary

The anticipated base pay range for this position is $142,000 to $244,950.

Bonus

The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation's performance over a calendar/ performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company's discretion on an individual basis.

This position is eligible to participate in the Company's long-term incentive program.

Employees are eligible for the following time off benefits:

Vacation - up to 120 hours per calendar year

Sick time - up to 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Washington - up to 56 hours per calendar year

Holiday pay, including Floating Holidays - up to 13 days per calendar year

Work, Personal and Family Time - up to 40 hours per calendar year
