The Senior Business Intelligence Developer works both independently and collaboratively to elicit requirements and create specifications. This role involves designing, architecting, and implementing complex and visually compelling reporting and business intelligence (BI) solutions such as data visualizations, extract-transform-load (ETL) processes, and ad hoc querying. The Senior BI Developer interfaces with various functional teams to support BI solution delivery, proactively identifying needs or issues and developing strategies to propose and implement technical and process solutions. This position leads large, complex, or specialized projects, serving as the subject matter expert for the most complex BI solutions, and is responsible for mentoring and training all levels of BI developers and customers.
Responsibilities:
Business Intelligence (BI) Development:
- Design and implement BI solutions to enable data analysis supporting strategic initiatives and business requirements.
- Develop end-user reports, ad hoc requests, data visualizations, ETL systems, and master data management (MDM).
- Ensure the provision of accurate data to fulfill requirements and build reusable and reliable code that ensures quality, performance, and responsiveness of reports.
BI Planning, Design, and Implementation:
- Perform requirements analysis, design, and implementation of end-user requested BI solutions.
- Collaborate with the Business Intelligence Analyst to define business requirements and provide specifications for end-user sign-off prior to development.
- Coordinate User Acceptance Testing, obtain end-user satisfaction with developed products, and implement final solutions.
BI Solution Administration and Documentation:
- Adhere to change control procedures and practices and write basic technical documentation for all created BI products.
- Monitor the health and performance of supported systems and communicate potential service problems by identifying patterns occurring across separate BI solutions.
Professional Development:
- Continuously learn and improve skills to stay competitive in the field and aligned with technological advances.
- Participate in conferences, seminars, and certification programs to ensure continued skill development and technical competency.
Development and Execution of Industry Security Standards:
- Develop and execute industry security standards related to BI development in line with adopted policy.
- Follow industry standards and best practices to ensure the security of information, communications, and data when developing BI solutions.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Extensive development, architecture, and configuration skills in Microsoft SQL Server.
- Extensive experience with SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) and SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS).
- Expert level competence with Microsoft T-SQL, including complex queries and stored procedures.
- High competence with Microsoft Visual Studio and SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS).
- Proven experience in developing BI solutions (reports, ETL, data visualizations, data extracts).
- Experience in gathering business and technical requirements and preparing and documenting specifications.
- Experience with Microsoft PowerShell.
- High computer literacy with desktop and cloud-based productivity software such as Office365, Microsoft Office desktop applications, Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, and Skype.
- Experience using a source code control system, preferably Git.
- Knowledge of Microsoft PowerBI for developing and architecting data visualizations is preferred.
- Experience working within an agile development process is preferred.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including mentoring, coaching, collaborating, and team building.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proven problem-solving abilities with the capability to debug complex processes.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Integrity and decision-making skills necessary to work with and protect confidential personal health information.
