Job Title: Research Associate – Bioanalysis and Biofabrication
Position Overview:
The Research Associate – Bioanalysis and Biofabrication is responsible for providing leadership, management, and technical support for shared facilities and equipment used in the analysis and fabrication of biological samples. This role includes overseeing the operations of both staffed and unstaffed facilities, consulting on study design and implementation, creating operating procedures, and managing health and safety protocols related to equipment usage.
Key Responsibilities:
Research Support
- Offer expert consultation on the design and execution of studies utilizing shared equipment.
- Develop and maintain standard operating procedures for core facility equipment.
- Assist researchers with experimental design, including high-level strategies and specific techniques.
Facilities Leadership and Management
- Oversee the development and operations of the Bioanalysis and Biofabrication core facility, which integrates biomolecular and cellular analysis with bioprinting and microfluidic methods to support bioengineering research.
- Ensure the facilities meet the needs of both internal and external users.
- Work closely with leadership, faculty advisory groups, and users to develop long-term business plans for sustaining the shared facilities.
- Collaborate with campus facilities personnel on installation and infrastructure projects.
User Base Development
- Build and sustain a strong internal and external user base.
- Foster collaborative relationships with diverse groups of stakeholders, including faculty, researchers, administrators, and external partners.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in a STEM field.
- Five years of progressively responsible experience in shared research/equipment facilities with a focus on biological samples and experiments.
- Five years of experience with bioanalytical techniques, 3D bioprinting tools, cell culture and analysis, rheological analysis, and microscopy.
- Experience in project management, staff and/or student supervision, and financial/budget administration in a scientific/technical facility.
Professional Competencies:
- Knowledge of research laboratory safety regulations and facility infrastructure, operations, and maintenance.
- Progressive management experience in a related technical environment.
- Financial management and business development experience in a shared core facility environment.
- Experience assisting researchers with experimental design and scientific methods, including both high-level approaches and specific techniques.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills.
- Proficiency with software and technology, including hands-on operation of core facility tools.
- Ability to manage competing interests from multiple stakeholders in a fast-paced R&D setting.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Professional experience managing or providing technical leadership in a comparable research facility.
- Advanced degree in bioengineering, biomedical engineering, materials science engineering, materials science, physics, biophysics, or a related field.
- Experience with the installation and maintenance of major research equipment.
- Experience with biomaterials analysis, chemical synthesis of bioinks, co-culture of human cells, immunohistological staining, cryosectioning, and imaging of 3D constructs.
- Project management and/or finance skills, including budget management in a technical environment.
- Experience implementing and managing complex safety regulations and protocols.
- Familiarity with financial and administrative policies, rules, and procedures.
