Position Overview:


The Department of Earth Sciences is on the lookout for a dedicated geoscientist to fill a tenure-track faculty role, with a focus on subduction zone science.

The ideal candidate will engage in pioneering research related to the dynamics of active tectonic regions and associated geohazards in subduction zones.

This may encompass areas such as seismic activity, volcanology, petrology, geochemistry, surface processes, structural geology, mantle dynamics, and marine science.

The role will prioritize data-driven research utilizing various sensor technologies (including remote, terrestrial, satellite, or airborne), laboratory analysis, field investigations, and model development.

Collaboration across disciplines with a diverse range of partners and community stakeholders is highly valued, both for fundamental research and for applying scientific findings to address significant social issues.

We seek an innovative colleague who will establish a robust, externally funded research program, instruct both undergraduate and graduate courses, and actively promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the geosciences.


Department Summary:


The Department of Earth Sciences is a key instructional unit within the College of Arts and Sciences, supporting extensive research initiatives across various fields in Earth and Environmental Science.

The department comprises approximately 30 faculty members, over 60 graduate students, and more than 100 undergraduate majors.

Research Focus Areas:
(a)

Geophysics:
tectonics, seismology, remote sensing, and fault mechanics; (b)

Volcanology:
geochemistry, physical volcanology, igneous petrology; (c)

Climate Science:
glaciology, paleoclimate, oceanography; (d)

Paleontology:
vertebrate paleontology, paleoecology; (e)

Surface Processes:
hydrology, sedimentology, geomorphology; (f)

Planetary Geology:
space physics, astrobiology.

Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Earth Sciences or a related discipline.

Demonstrated commitment to scholarly excellence, evidenced by peer-reviewed publications, grants, and research collaborations relevant to the position.


Preferred Qualifications:


Ability to enhance existing departmental strengths and infrastructure, such as the Cascadia Region Earthquake Science Center and the Oregon Center for Volcanology.
