The Safety Coordinator is an exempt position that is part of the Operations Team and reports to the Corporate Safety Manager. As the Safety Coordinator, your focus will be to ensure the implementation of the Dawson safety programs, provide training, identify risks and provide solutions to ensure the successful and safe execution of various construction projects in the commercial, education, healthcare, industrial, and infrastructure markets. The position is based in Bellingham, Washington office and will require 60% of the time to be spent on the jobsites with occasional overnight travel required.
The ideal candidate will have a background in construction safety, be well-versed in safety regulations, is motivated, solution orientated, and wants to be part of an organization that values safety. Duties/Responsibilities
- Assists in the overall implementation of the company's HSE program. Leads and influences day-to-day programs, including new employee orientations, training, and regulatory record keeping and reporting.
- Participates in pre-construction and pre-installation meetings. Identify project/task safety needs and risks.
- Coordinate with project teams to create site-specific safety plans; actively participate in safety meetings, review project work plans, identify risk, provide recommendations/solutions to mitigate risk of injury.
- Audit field operations for compliance with regulatory standards, corporate safety policy and identify any potential safety hazards and provides a solution to the Superintendent, General Superintendent and Safety Manager.
- Applies knowledge of OSHA/WISHA, MSHA, EPA/RRP, DOT, ANSI, ASME, and NFPA requirements as related to Dawson project work. This includes ensuring appropriate written programs/procedures, best practices, trainings are provided and programs implementation at the project level.
- Assists the Safety Manager with monitoring new legislation that would affect safety policies and procedures and proposes necessary changes. Assists with the development and implementation of new processes, best practices, and training.
- Provides regulatory and policy review and interpretation and technical advice to project managers and superintendents.
- Respond to incident and injuries during work hours and emergencies after work hours. Conduct injury/incident investigations, create written reports, and lead incident review meetings with the project team with the focus on developing lessons learned that can be implemented company-wide to prevent similar incidents from occurring.
- Maintain safety metrics. Continually review lagging and leading indicators from audit summaries, observations, and injury statistics and propose structured programs/processes to continually lower risks associated with potential accidents and losses.
- Identify and maintain forward looking, dependable systems and processes.
Education and/or Experience
- 1 to 5 years of experience in construction with safety related responsibilities.
- Bachelor’s degree in safety/Quality and/or Risk Management preferred.
- Basic construction hazard recognition and risk reduction principles.
- Must have or obtain at least one (1) safety certification: Associate Safety Professional (ASP); Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician (OHST); Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST); Certified Safety Professional (CSP); Certified Safety and Health Manager (CSHM).
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Working knowledge of relevant WA L&I, OSHA safety regulations and construction best practices and able to apply and communicate safety laws in easy to understand and simple ways.
- Able to operate independently, exercising good judgment with little to no supervision.
- Able to work effectively on their own and within a team.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Understands all aspects of the safety system and able how to handle new things as they arise.
- Ability to meet productivity standards; completes work in a timely and accurate manner.
- Able to travel up to 20%.
- Fluency in Spanish preferred.
- Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship now or in the future.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
- Compensation - $70,000 to $85,000 annual salary
- Annual Bonus: depends upon individual and company performance.
