Position Summary

Provides leadership to the organization's efforts to obtain financial and other support to sustain its work, including planned, annual and deferred giving; approaches to individuals, foundations and corporations. Manages the overall marketing and promotional functions to construct and market an appropriate image, develop ties with the community, and achieve membership/participation goals. Manages department budgets. Formulates and implements policies and plans to meet the organization's short- and long-term objectives.


The Director of Development & Communications leads the execution and management of a development strategy and comprehensive giving program. This role will work collaboratively with the Chief Executive Officer and the Board of Directors to determine communication and solicitation strategies involving email, social media, direct mail, phone/mail, personal visitation, volunteer engagement and matching gifts.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities


Management Responsibilities

·       Manage duties and positions responsible for donor relationship management, grant writing, volunteer coordination, government relations and other Development functions.

·       Establish and execute annual Development Plan outlining strategies to identify, cultivate, solicit, and track individual, corporate, foundation, and government funding to meet established Agency goals.

·       Oversee Second Chance’s website and social media outreach.


Development Strategy

·       Develop and execute strategies for annual and individual giving campaigns.

·       Integrate development and marketing/communications strategies to maximize Second Chance’s brand exposure and fundraising opportunities.

·       Establish policies, systems, and procedures, with a special emphasis on professionalism and ethical standards, for soliciting, acknowledging, tracking, and reporting gifts.

·       Conduct media relations activities in support of the agency’s strategy and development plan.

·       Serve as a senior liaison to the Board of Directors and its committees in all development-related areas.

·       Serve as a close strategic advisor and partner to the President and CEO


Fundraising

  • Develops relationships with private foundations, corporations, and granting agencies.
  • Cultivates and stewards prospective and current grant makers through regular contact by phone, face-to-face meetings and site visits.

·       Manage and direct the grant management lifecycle and grant portfolio

·       Coordinate fundraising efforts for annual operations, capital improvements, and endowment expansion.

 


 

Evaluation

·       Ensures programs are meeting established outcomes as proposed to funding agencies. Advises the CEO and leadership of any areas of concern.

·       Regularly reviews spenddown of grants to ensure compliance with stipulated agreements and donor intent.


Donor Relationship Management

·       Work directly with donors at multiple levels including prospecting, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.

·       Plan and execute a donor lifecycle, retention, and maintenance (moves management) approach to individual and institutional giving.

·       Build and maintain critical relationships with key local organizations and partners.

·       Manage the configuration and use of a CRM system, ensuring donor privacy, data accuracy and timeliness of acknowledgements and reporting.


Develop and implement a fundraising and donor stewardship program

·       Manage relationship with a portfolio of identified donors. This includes the identification, qualification, cultivation, stewardship and solicitation of in-kind, recurring, one-time and annual donors.

·       Develop and manage communication strategies for segmented populations to include prospective donors, new donors, annual donors and lapsed donors.

·       Create, implement and manage an engagement, communication and solicitation calendar.

·       Plan and direct donor stewardship activities to include developing relationships, thank you letters, recognition opportunities and events.

·       Oversee events and ensure they tell the Second Chance story in a way that compels diverse audiences to get involved.

·       Conduct thorough donor research, prepare and present briefings to leadership team prior to donor/prospect site visits.

·       Oversee the in-kind donations of supplies and services.

Education and Experience

·       Bachelor’s degree

·       Minimum 6 years of work experience in development.

·       Experience working with diverse audiences, volunteers, and major donors.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite. 


Background check, dmv, and vehicle:

  • Required to have a valid driver’s license and properly registered and insured motor vehicle meeting the minimum level of insurance as defined under the California Department of Motor Vehicle Code.
  • Meet background and security clearance guidelines and pass background check:

1.     Background check conducted in accordance with the California Fair Chance Act, including assessments by the State of California Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

  1. Drug Testing as required by federal contracts.
  2. Driving record through the State of California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)
